I want you to know your staff team performed fantastically yesterday. They setup and helped ensure a good outcome to what is, to my knowledge, the first abdominopelvic SP robotic case at Carilion Clinic and the first pediatric SP case in Virginia. They would be the fourth team in country to perform a pediatric SP case (two of the other three sites being Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic). Evidently yesterday was an Intuitive holiday, so we did not have a da Vinci rep to support us. Caleb, Tammy, Renee were there early and did a great job.

This is Nuclear Medicine week and please help Carilion celebrate. One of the goals of nuclear medicine week is to educate non nuclear medicine professionals and seek to expand knowledge about how nuclear medicine impacts patients.  

Nuclear medicine seeks to use targets to diagnose and treat disease.  Nuclear medicine is evolving rapidly, but we are not new.  The first Radioactive therapy was done more than 80 years ago on thyroid cancer and is still widely performed today.

Kudos to Terresa Odum for her presentation at the National Association of Healthcare Revenue Integrity's conference on September 19 in Charlotte, NC.  Terresa delivered a talk titled "How Incorrect or Incomplete Authorizations Create Denials and What Carilion Clinic CVI Did to Address Them". We extend our gratitude to Terresa for her outstanding contributions and for sharing her knowledge with other healthcare revenue cycle leaders.

Well, the Health Analytics Department is made up of a huge variation of very talented individuals who you may be aware of and work with every day, others may be a little more behind the scenes.

Kimberly McDow and India Davidson, two of Carilion Clinic's outpatient physical therapists, have passed the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties' Orthopedic Exam to become Board-Certified Clinical Specialists in Orthopedics! 

The Carilion Clinic Women's ERG hosted our first in-person panel discussion with Carilion's Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Jeanne Armentrout to discuss Women in Leadership in 2023. We had approximately 60 employees join our discussion in-person and via Microsoft Teams.

No disrespect to Paul Revere and the Red Coats, but the Blue Shirts are back!

For the first time since 2019, youth volunteers have returned to Carilion Clinic. Because of the global pandemic, the Summer Youth program was suspended for several summers. But Guest Services is proud to welcome a fresh-faced group of youth volunteers in Roanoke, New River Valley and Franklin facilities. Some youth volunteer because they are interested in a career in health care. Others come because they just want to help people.

May is Stroke awareness month. The Stroke Program team made rounds to several CRMH units to interact with staff, review stroke education and discuss signs and symptoms of a stroke. Along with education, staff received coffee and fun giveaways to remind them how to spot a stroke and call for help. Many thanks to Ellen Harvey, D.N.P., C.N.S., Stroke Program Quality Improvement Facilitator Chrystal Wilson, and Stroke Specialist Pam Flinchum, R.N., for providing interactive education in a creative and fun way.

Congratulations to Corporate Communications Manager Linda Staley, APR, Fellow PRSA, who has been tapped to lead a national workgroup to provide guidance on the ethical implications and considerations on the emerging use of artificial intelligence (AI) on the public relations profession and society. The role is part of her work as a member of the Public Relations Society of America’s Board of Ethics and Professional Standards (BEPS).
