Sunny Kook and Stephanie Defilippis received the Innovation in Nursing Research Award for their poster presentation at the VNA Innovations Fall Conference in Richmond on September 21-22, 2018. Their poster, entitled "Efficacy of Intermittent Heparin Flush Versus Normal Saline Flush in Adult Implanted Ports in Prevention of Catheter Occlusions" disseminated the findings from their 2017-2018 Nursing Research Fellowship sponsored by the Carilion Clinic Office of Nursing Research.
Mike Dame has been recognized as one of the 2018 Top Hospital Marketers of 2018.
The honorees are recognized for “driving innovation, spearheading great creative, and working toward better branding for their hospital, health system, or facility. Honorees were judged based on industry reputation, accomplishments, innovation, and notoriety among their peers, partners and media.”
Mike and his peers from across the nation were named to this list by HMN Perspectives, Inc., and will be inducted at a national hospital marketing conference this June in Atlanta.

Mark Farley, RN, CFRN expressed concern for a potential patient safety issue by inquiring about the default KVO rate of the Hospira IV pumps utilized at CGCH. Many high-risk and critical medication drips, such as those used for cardiac purposes, sedation and blood glucose management, are often infusing at low rates (ml/ hr). If the volume to be infused is complete, the pumps revert to a default KVO rate as they alert.
The Clinical Advancement and Patient Safety Department would like to recognize Bradley Icard, D.O., for identifying and reporting an opportunity for improvement related to our medication assistance program.
Morgan Atkins, P.T.A., has been providing care for a particular patient. The patient arrived to therapy this week with slurred speech and not herself. She stated that her doctor had refilled her medication with a current dosage of 100mg, and she was to work up to taking two pills in the morning and three at night. When she picked up her medication, the dosage was 300mg, and she assumed her doctor had increased the dosage. Morgan was concerned about the patient and looked in Epic at the physician's note, and the dosage was to continue at 100mg.
