The BEE Award was created to celebrate CMC's amazing ancillary staff who go above and beyond in supporting the nursing care of our patients and families.  Rachel is so deserving of this award. Her story below tells of her swift response and heroic efforts to save one of our most precious patients!

Lisa Hardison RT, R, CT in the imaging at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center exemplifies Courage by standing up for a patient by saving her an imaging study that she had done two months prior. The patient's insurance would not cover the cost of a duplicate study. Lisa's actions prevented the patient from incurring unnecessary costs. By intervening on behalf of this patient, Lisa demonstrated courage by putting the patient's best interests first. Way to go Lisa!

Today we want to celebrate Larra Newcomb, RN on 10 Mountain PCU. She is very attentive to her patients' conditions and needs each day. In the past couple of weeks, she has twice noticed orders for Urinalysis with Reflex Culture in patients that did not meet criteria for a Urine Culture. Larra advocated for her patients to the physicians to have the Cultures cancelled. She was successful in her advocacy and saved possible false positive cultures and unneeded antibiotic usage. Great Work Larra - Your 10 Mountain PCU family is very proud of you! 

Camp Treehouse is a free day-camp for kids ages 6-18, who have lost a loved one and are working to process their grief. The Center for Grief and Healing’s arts-themed camp series explores healing self-expression through art, dance, music, imagery and creative writing. 

Ashley Cates, RN received the Great Catch Award for speaking up to improve patient care during hand-off communication.

Brittany Custer demonstrated her keen sense of observation, creating a safer environment for our patients and staff.

Bonnie and Jennifer are long term employees at CFMH in Environmental Services.  These ladies understand that it takes team work to keep our environment safe and they do not hesitate to speak up when they find something during the course of their work that presents a potential safety issue.

We appreciate their dedication to safety and their willingness to report concerns when they find them.

The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) is an international nonprofit consortium of health care institutions, researchers, and industry partners. We provide support to those delivering extracorporeal life support through continuing education, guidelines, original research, publications, and a comprehensive registry of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patient data.

The American Society of ExtraCorporeal Technology (AmSECT) hosts a Leadership Symposium consisting of a series of four, monthly webinars and a one-day, in-person symposium held at the AmSECT International Conference geared toward aspiring perfusion leaders. The AmSECT Leadership Task Force reviews applications, and attendees are selected based on their qualifications, experience and personal statement.

Carol Isom showed great knowledge today with outstanding knowledge of how Emergency Medicine is to be performed. We had a pt who was hemmorhaging with erratic vitals and noticed that the pt was decompensating and acted urgently. She went to go grab the Bellmont and advocated to blood bank to urgently send down blood STAT. She displayed very effective communitcation through multiple disiplines (ie RN and MD staff) to get the help this pt needed when she was on the brink of meeting her demise.
