"A 6-year-old having a hard time after anesthesia and his mama was by herself and clearly exhausted, but Kelly went in that room to give that mama a break and rocked that sweet baby to sleep."
From tiny fighters to full blown superheroes, this year’s NICU Graduation Reunion was a joyful celebration of just how far our smallest patients have come.
More than 200 former NICU patients and their families returned for a hero-themed reunion with the care teams who knew them in their very first days. For many families a NICU stay can last weeks or even months. The bond built during that time runs deep, and this event gave families and staff the chance to reconnect, celebrate, and see just how much these little ones have grown.
I wanted to give a shout out to Christian Thurman-Parking Assistant. I had a slight fall and visited the ER Saturday. When I finished with my "stay" I was waiting inside for my ride. He saw me sitting and watching and came in to ask if I was OK and did I need anything. Ask about the "car" that would be picking me up so he could assist. I observed him assisting several other folks that was withing his "area". He politely assisted them and directed them to where they needed to go. When my car arrived, he assisted me to the car and opened the door.
On 4/28, Guest Services team members Brandon Davis and Annie Henderson sprang into action when a staff member experienced a medical emergency. They quickly activated the appropriate emergency response, provided immediate support, and followed up afterward to ensure continued care.
Their swift action, attention to detail, and genuine compassion were instrumental in achieving a positive outcome. Brandon and Annie exemplified the very best of what it means to be part of Carilion—demonstrating care, commitment, and teamwork when it mattered most.
Happy Patient Experience Week! Patient Experience is celebrated this week, April 27 - May 1, 2026! During this time, we will join organizations across the country honoring the people who shape the experiences of our patients, families, and one another.
Those people are you, our caregivers. Every person who puts on the badge.

The experience is shaped in moments. The way we show up for one another and for those we serve is what defines that experience.
I want to personally thank Dawn Goodman and her team for the compassion they exhibited toward Carilion Clinic employees whose payroll direct deposits were negatively impacted last week by the MemberOne/Virginia Credit Union merger. I can attest it has been a frustrating weekend for me and my family. I am well aware that I was not the only "casualty" on Friday of the MemberOne/VACU payroll deposit error!
Jason is a great team player! He is really good with the kids and getting them to calm down. He even took one of the kids in Peds on a little tour of the emergency room just so he could get out of the room a bit!
Always does his job well and with a smile!
Robert Martin is a perfect example of an employee who demonstrates Carilion Clinics values, especially when it comes to compassion. He's a great educator, friend and coworker to all, whether it's helping teach us Epic or jumping a car for an employee. He's just an all-around great guy!!
