Small Beginnings, Superhero Strength

Submitted by cjholtzhauer on

From tiny fighters to full blown superheroes, this year’s NICU Graduation Reunion was a joyful celebration of just how far our smallest patients have come.

More than 200 former NICU patients and their families returned for a hero-themed reunion with the care teams who knew them in their very first days. For many families a NICU stay can last weeks or even months. The bond built during that time runs deep, and this event gave families and staff the chance to reconnect, celebrate, and see just how much these little ones have grown.

The tiniest patients we once cared for are now busy toddlers, proud big kids, and full of personality. They ran, played, laughed, and visited with their former healthcare team. Families reconnected with nurses, providers, and staff who were part of their earliest days, while kids were able to enjoy an afternoon full of fun, play, and community.

The day was packed with special guests and activities fit for every kind of hero. Spiderman swung by, Rapunzel and Elana made an appearance. There were ballerinas, Mill Mountain Zoo animals, dogs from pet therapy, inflatable games, and hands on fun with Safe Kids, the local library, Family Advisory Board, Ronald McDonald House, Virginia Tech student groups, and many dedicated staff and volunteers who helped bring the day to life.

It was a sweet and meaningful reminder that NICU care does not end at discharge. It grows into lasting connection, shared celebration, and the joy of watching these tiny heroes thrive.
