Teddy Bears and Tubies

Submitted by cjholtzhauer on

Over the weekend the Child Life Team turned a conference room at Carilion Children’s Tanglewood into the one of the tiniest and sweetest little clinics. The patients? Teddy bears, stuffed animals, and a few very loved creatures. Kids from across the community were invited to bring in their stuffy and take them through different hands-on stations.

Shout out to the Palliative Care Team at RMH

I wanted to take a moment to give a heartfelt shout out to the incredible Palliative Care Team. As many of you know, when we mention to folks in the community that we work for Carilion, it often sparks stories about their experiences with us. Recently, I had the privilege of meeting a man whose son passed away at RMH. He spoke with deep gratitude about the Palliative Care Team and the excellent care they provided for his son and sharing how much it meant to him and his wife to have been kept fully informed and supported throughout their son’s care.

Amazing Resp Therapist !!

I would like to take a moment to recognize and sincerely thank an outstanding respiratory therapist for the exceptional care and support provided in the PACU, Peter Mujica. Today, respiratory services were significantly short-staffed, Peter truly went above and beyond to ensure that every patient's needs were met. Despite the demands of managing multiple high-acuity cases at once, he made certain that all four ventilated patients were cared for efficiently and safely. He also took the time to support the nursing staff, ensuring we had everything we needed to provide the best possible care.

Shout out staff on 10 MTN ICU!

Today, multiple staff members (Allyson D, Madeline W, Dani M, Michelle W, and Alyson C) on the unit helped to cheer a patient up that has been with us for 71 days. This included decorating her room, having a Post Malone "concert", and bringing in a Post Malone poster for all the staff to sign. I think it was a day the patient will remember! Thank you to all that have cared for this patient and went ABOVE AND BEYOND to put a smile on her face today. So proud to be a part of this team.

Dr. Obafemi Ifelowo - Physician Recognition Award - April 2026

Dr. Ifelowo was recognized for an exceptional act of kindness and compassion.  Dr. Ifelowo was observed in the elevator with a specialty coffee.  After getting off on the 8th floor and heading to 8 South, it became clear that he had personally purchased the coffee for one of his patients.  The patient was extremely pleased and shared that they had never experienced a physician going above and beyond in such a thoughtful way.

Small Actions, Big Impact

Carrie Williamson went above and beyond to make a meaningful impact in a patient’s life. While helping coordinate Meals on Wheels, she noticed the patient had missed multiple important phone messages because his ringer was turned off, including outreach from healthcare facilities and home health. Thanks to Carrie’s attentiveness and compassion, she helped resolve the phone issue, discovered that home health services had been discontinued due to missed contact, and helped get the patient reconnected so he could continue on his path to wellness.
