My youngest son and I had to take my husband to the ED on March 16th at 5:30 am with chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate and dizziness. Within minutes he was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia. The ED doctor was Dr Neale ( I think that was her name ). She was great and stayed by my husband'' side through each treatment they tried. The patient rep, Andrew was very compassionate and stayed with me and my son until the end of his shift and then Ashley took over. Also very compassionate. He saw Dr Allen a cardiologist in the ED and he followed him till discharge.

Judy Conley strives to ensure that all patients receive the best care and assistance possible. She is always willing to jump in and help where needed, ensure patients get prompt hospital follow up appointments with their PCP, and always displays a positive attitude. Having her as a part of my team not only helps to make me more successful in my career, but also makes a difference in the lives of all of the patients that she touches. A true display of compassion. Thank you Judy for all you do to make a difference for the Giles Family Practice, as well as Care Coordination.

Last week, as I was sitting in Triage waiting for shift change in the early am, I heard Barbara from PAS talking with an elderly couple down the hallway- apparently  they were here for some outpatient testing, and  had some hearing deficits, as Barbara was speaking quite clearly and slowly to them. She gave them one of our beepers that we use to notify pts when it is their turn for x-ray, etc.

Three small children, all under the age of 4, were brought into the Emergency Department at CGCH. The children had been sprayed with and/or exposed to a chemical and had to be decontaminated. This process involves removing the clothing they were wearing while exposed leaving them with nothing to wear on a winter’s night in Giles County. Christina Salazar, Director of ED and Surgical Services, took it upon herself to go to the local Walmart and purchase clothing for all of the children- from socks and underwear to shirts and pants.

CGCH presented their 3rd Values Award to Ken Hatfield in the Imaging Department. Ken was nominated for this award for many reasons, but the story that put him over the top was this one: One day a patient called to say she would be late for her appointment. Her car had broken down, she said, so she was going to have to walk to her appointment. Immediately after the patient hung up the phone, Ken noticed that it was raining. He called the patient back and told her to wait for him. He then drove to pick up the patient to drive her to the hospital for her appointment.

Today as I was eating lunch in the Mountain View cafe I witnessed a visitor and his family in distress because his battery operated oxygen machine wasn't working and was alarming.  Robin, a Respiratory Therapist here at Carilion Roanoke came to the rescue.

Lori set up the sweetest hot chocolate station! She and her pharmacy crew went throughout the entire hospital delivering hot chocolate to everyone "just because it's cold!" - and this was no ordinary hot chocolate station! She had marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint and more AND even an assortment of doughnuts! It hit the spot on one of those freezing cold days. This was the nicest thing ever and meant so much to all of us! Thanks to Lori and all of the pharmacy crew for being so good to us!!

Its great to see you recognized for something we see every day!

Recently we had a patient in a wheelchair come in to our facility being pushed by their wife. When they got to the doors for the Rehab Department the wife was struggling to push the chair through and keep the door open. Wendi Griggs in Patient Access noticed this from across the lobby and went over to help this couple. She also took the time to get them all the way to their destination so they wouldn't have any more trouble. Thank you Wendi, for noticing a person in need of assistance and taking the time to care for them!

I would like to take a moment and recognize Valerie  our referral coordinator. Valerie goes above and beyond every single day for the patients in our small rural community of Floyd. She handles insurance companies, DME companies, getting testing approved, calls specialists and patients non stop all day in addition to the her other chaotic responsibilities. Today in her eyes was a typical day but what she did not realize is that she helped myself and 3 separate patients/families in emergent situations  get the care they needed.
