On August 9th, the 4 South PACU completed their first Critical Care Simulation class in the Satellite Simulation Center at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The Critical Care Simulation class is a four-hour hands-on, incorporates teamwork and includes four high acuity scenarios. I am confident that this class will help our PACU RNs be more prepared in higher acuity situations, improving patient care.

Bridgewater and Dayton Family Medicine Clinics have shown collaboration working together to solve staffing shortages and provide cross coverage for each other.  As the manager of both clinics, I am so proud of all the teams efforts.  Not only are they willing to cross cover when asked the staff are now working with one another to see potential issues and solve staff shortage issues for each other before being asked!  Shout out to all the team members of both offices.  

Special thank you to Lifeguard for coming to our local fire department to provide additional training (H.E.A.T) to Elliston Fire, Montgomery County Fire and EMS, members of Blacksburg Rescue and members of Christiansburg Fire! They learned a lot and are glad they have the knowledge to assist when needed.

In concert with the Blue Ridge Partnership for Health Science Careers, a group created to support the workforce required for the health science field, Carilion Clinic held several focus groups. These focus groups were held to gather feedback on Career Maps that will be distributed to a variety of audiences and will expose the community to the amazing opportunities in the health sciences field.

Unwashed hands are the primary way that pathogens are transmitted throughout the healthcare environment. Many healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are caused by pathogens transmitted from one patient to another via the contaminated hands of healthcare workers. This month CNRV held the first ever Hand Hygiene Derby, encouraging units to complete their required observations through a healthy dose of competition.

Our youth volunteers wind down their summer with a terrific sendoff from our Carilion community and the community at large: Nearly 500 donated items for the CRMH Clothes Closet!

Carilion Mental Health Senior Director Lisa Dishner was recently appointed to the Roanoke-Catawba Local Human Rights Committee (LHRC) to participate in state regulation decision making and advocate for mental health services.

I'd like to give a HUGE shout out to my fellow front desk team, particularly Laura, Jenn, Debbie and Wendy! Yesterday was an EXTREMELY rough day. We were understaffed, which was ok. But we had some very unreasonable patients that were difficult and had lots of just plain old weird things happening. We all wondered if it was a full moon! 

From youth volunteers doing TV interviews to employees leaving bags in drop-off boxes, the 2023 clothes drive is in full swing! Thank you, thank you, thank you to the Carilion employees and members of the community who have donated!
