At CNRVMC, when a balloon slips loose from a floral arrangement near the main entrance, it can pose a surprising risk of triggering the fire alarm. When that happens, the maintenance team quickly comes together, collaborating and brainstorming ways to safely retrieve it before any disruption occurs. From our perspective in Guest Services, it’s always impressive—and a bit entertaining—to watch their teamwork in action.

Last Friday, our Derm team provided skin screenings for Roanoke County, Roanoke City, and Salem Fire employees. Organized by Lesli Mace, PA and Roanoke County's Fire Chief, the event screened 60 firefighters in our community. Firefighters are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer, particularly melanoma, and are often diagnosed at a younger age.

Carilion Clinic Hospice was awarded a VCU Geriatric Training and Education (GTE) grant for an initiative entitled, “Community Outreach and Education in End-of-Life (EOL) Supportive Care, EOL Doula Training, and EOL Candid Conversations”.  This project aims to normalize conversations about death and dying by offering various community forums with an intent to explore end-of-life (EOL) care, educate on EOL doula support, and discuss related fears and concerns in a safe, supportive environment. 

As an experienced ICU nurse, I have many years of managing emergent health crisis situations working with the team and ensuring the best outcomes for my patients. Therefore, it is always a humbling experience when you have to then step into the role of loved one, on the sidelines, during a health crisis of someone you love. My very dear friend had to emergently visit the CNRV ER, ICU, and Cath Lab with a life-threatening situation. I could not be prouder of our amazing hospital and their collaboration, compassion, and teamwork in the care of my close friend.

Thank you Whitney for jumping in and helping out without ever having to ask. We may be drowning but she will always help keep our head above the water. 

We are excited to celebrate the successful completion of our pilot collaboration between Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) Dental Hygiene students and Carilion Clinic!

Sometimes it takes a village! Rachel Kiefer (ED RN) stepped up for a patient in need in the ICU at FMH! 
After initial attempts at foley placement and bladder decompression were not successful. Rachel stepped up and with diligence and care was able to place a catheter and provide relief and comfort to this patient in need! 
At a regional hospitals we often have to rely on interdepartmental collaboration to elevate the care. Sharing skill sets across teams to provide the best care, is part of what makes CFMH so special. 

I would like to recognize Kristi Raney on her prompt attention and collaboration with multiple team members in the operative and PACU settings to correct a potential medication dosing error that was identified in the critical care unit by the team. She immediately responded to the email, collaborated with anesthesia teams and PACU teams to remedy the practice and describe how the practice was a patient safety issue.

On April 16, 2026, we proudly celebrated National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) with events held across eight locations, reinforcing our commitment to advance care planning for our employees and community.

Thanks to the dedication of our Advance Care Planning professionals and partners, we were able to provide 201 advance directives during the event—empowering participants to take an important step in documenting and communicating their healthcare wishes.
