Kendra Bolt, Ashley Chaffin, and Carmon Shelton identified that a patient scheduled for a fem-pop procedure was confused and not fully oriented, raising concerns about her ability to provide informed consent. Although consents had been signed, staff recognized they were not legally valid, as consent was obtained from an individual who was not the patient’s MPOA or next of kin.

While working on 7S PCU I was tasked with taking a VERY stubborn IV pump off of the pole after many others had tried and been unsuccessful to do so. Kourtne from Resource Pool saw me at the end of the hallway working with it and offered her assistance. Between the two of us we were able to use our strength get the pump off of the pole for the next patient to use! Thanks so much to Kourtne for offering to help during her busy time of moving from floor to floor. We are so lucky to have her as part of the team!

The Electric Road (Oak Grove) Family Medicine Team recently celebrated an outstanding accomplishment: 6 out of 6 metrics met! They achieved their goals in statins, diabetic kidney health, A1c control, hypertension control, colorectal cancer screening, and annual wellness visits. Congratulations!

Frances Jura, a transporter at CNRV, assisted in an emergent situation with a patient! The patient became unresponsive during transport and Frances immediately alerted nursing staff for assistance. He helped nursing staff transfer the patient onto a stretcher, which allowed staff to provide emergency lifesaving care. This resulted in the patient having a positive outcome! Thank you Frances for all you do! Lots of love from the SCU team!! 

Members of the Community Health and Development team collaborated to provide education on heart-supportive diets and blood pressure management at Melrose Plaza on April 4th during the Power of H.E.R. event hosted by the Delta Theta Sigma Roanoke Alumnae Chapter. The shared table also highlighted contributions from the Keeley Healing Arts Program and featured the Sankofa bird--an example of a collaborative community art project building on a theme displayed throughout Melrose Plaza (the Sankofa bird).

Carilion was named one of the 2026 Top Virginia Employers for Interns by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), acknowledging strong internship programs throughout the state. SCHEV honored 161 employers for their efforts to establish high-impact, career-launching internships. 

Carilion Clinic and Roanoke County Public Schools have announced a long-term partnership to support workforce development through the new Roanoke County Career and Technology Center (RCCTC), set to open in 2027. As part of this effort, Carilion will invest approximately $1.25 million over five years to support health sciences education, including programs that provide students with early exposure to careers such as nursing, emergency medical services, and radiologic technology.

Makalyn consistently goes above and beyond in everything she does. She looks for the small ways to add just a little more—whether it’s helping a teammate, taking extra care with a task, or stepping in where she’s needed. Her willingness to learn, pitch in, and support others does not go unnoticed. Thank you, Makalyn, for your positive attitude, dedication, and commitment to excellence. You truly make a difference!
