Carilion Clinic Recognized for Internship Excellence

Submitted by News Team on

Carilion was named one of the 2026 Top Virginia Employers for Interns by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), acknowledging strong internship programs throughout the state. SCHEV honored 161 employers for their efforts to establish high-impact, career-launching internships.

The annual award celebrates Virginia employers who provide hands-on experiences, direct access to senior leadership, structured mentorship and industry certifications that equip students with real-world, in-demand skills.

"This is fantastic news and due to a lot of creative, innovative, and hard work by our Workforce Development team," says Paul Hudgins, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. "I couldn't be prouder of this team's efforts to build the talent pipeline for our future workforce."

The high school/college Summer Internship program is a key strategy for attracting and developing future talent and an important component in meeting our staffing needs to deliver on our mission. During our 2025 Summer Internship program, we welcomed and onboarded 100 high school and college summer interns (the most to date), who were placed in both clinical and non-clinical areas within Carilion.

"Students are critical to our workforce strategy, and at Carilion, a summer internship is more than just temporary employment, it’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact on a student’s career and the community, and to develop future talent," says Sarah Boswell, Human Resources Recruitment Consultant who coordinates our Summer Internship program.
