Neurosurgery Team Travels to Nepal

Led by Mark Witcher, M.D., Ph.D., a team of Carilion Clinic Neurosurgery residents traveled to Nepal, South Asia on World Health Day last month, to offer a multi-surgical procedure workshop to 50 local neurosurgeons and trainees. Carilion’s team consulted with over 100 patients and performed surgery on six patients with excellent outcomes for Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.

The infusion and GYN Oncology teams at Riverside 1 soaked up the last little bit of summer with a dip competition!

Thank you to everyone who brought in a dip, taste-tested, and cast their vote! From savory to sweet, this competition was deliciously tough!

Our winner is Taylor with her Caramel Apple Cheesecake Dip! 🍏🍰 Congratulations to our dip champion and thank you to everyone who helped make today a fun day at work!

Celebrating a Great Catch for Patient Safety at CFMH

Kaitlin Belcher, RN was recently nominated for a Great Catch award by Kristin Brandenberger, Pharmacist at CFMH. Kaitlin identified and questioned a medication order that had been entered and verified in the electronic medical record. Recognizing that the ordered dose appeared significantly higher than expected, she appropriately escalated her concern for further review. Upon reassessment it was determined the order was incorrect. The incorrect order was discontinued and the appropriate order entered.

Kris Forren, Art Therapist for psychiatric/mental health,  donated his time and expertise to the Therapeutic Riding Association of Virginia's Educational Day, Sunday, August 8, 2026. This event was held at Brook Hill Farm in Forest, Virginia, for an audience of Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors from the state of Virginia. The theme of the workshop was "Trauma". The agenda was filled with speakers with expertise in this field. Kris generously donated his expertise to this audience for use in their programs.

On Thursday, August 6, Franklin Memorial Hospital was experiencing significant capacity challenges. Our inpatient unit was full, and the Emergency Department was holding four patients awaiting admission. We had a patient ready for discharge who required a PICC line placement before being able to go home on IV antibiotics. Unfortunately, we did not have anyone available locally to perform the procedure that day.

The team was recognized by multiple patients and caregivers for their exceptional compassion, professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to making every patient feel cared for. Nominators described the team as “top notch,” noting that they consistently go the extra mile, provide seamless care, and treat every patient with kindness and respect.

On Saturday, August 1, Carilion Children's proudly hosted the 4th Annual Cuts with Cops at our Tanglewood location. Together with our community partners, we helped children prepare for the new school year by providing school supplies, new shoes and socks, fresh haircuts, and other essential resources—ensuring they start the school year prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.
