Living our Values: "We Can Help!"

On Thursday, August 6, Franklin Memorial Hospital was experiencing significant capacity challenges. Our inpatient unit was full, and the Emergency Department was holding four patients awaiting admission. We had a patient ready for discharge who required a PICC line placement before being able to go home on IV antibiotics. Unfortunately, we did not have anyone available locally to perform the procedure that day.

I reached out to Heather Bramblett hoping she might have an idea or suggestion. Without hesitation, Heather responded, "We can help with this. Give me just a few minutes."

True to her word, Heather quickly coordinated assistance, and within the hour, two members of the Vascular Access Team arrived at Franklin to place the PICC line. Because of their willingness to step in and help another facility, our patient was able to be discharged safely and receive the care they needed at home. Their efforts also opened a much-needed inpatient bed during a time of high demand, allowing us to better care for other patients waiting for admission.

What makes this story so meaningful is not just what was done, but how it was done. Heather and the Vascular Access Team demonstrated the very essence of Carilion's Values. They showed Collaboration by working seamlessly across facilities, Commitment by responding immediately to an urgent need, and Compassion by ensuring a patient could return home to continue treatment without unnecessary delay.

In a moment when it would have been easy to say, "We're busy too," Heather and her team chose to say, "We can help." Their kindness, responsiveness, and servant-hearted approach made a real difference for a patient, a family, and an entire care team. I am deeply grateful for their support and proud to work alongside colleagues who embody the best of Carilion every day.
