What an amazing teamwork collaboration we had yesterday for a pediatric oncology hospice patient in the ED.

Between the ED Attending Dr Uherick, Hemonc Attending Dr Atkinson, the hospice nurse Krysta Smoot, myself Peds Hemonc nurse Reagan Brown, Hemonc Pharmacist Warren and Lobby Pharmacist Laz we seamlessly got this child what she needed to be taken care of the ED and then to go home with proper symptom management where the family wanted to be for her end of life.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. But you can do a lot to protect your heart and stay healthy. In February, the Women's Resource Group partnered with Stephanie Spencer, Health Educator and Julia Blanchard from Wellness to host a Healthy Heart event at the Giles Hospital. The turnout was great. People were able to ask questions, as well as, get BP checked, get handouts with healthy lifestyle, eating tips and recipes. Three people were chosen from a drawing to win BP monitors to help with their health journey.

Carilion Clinic Dental, in collaboration with Carilion Childrens and Carilion Community Outreach, held its first ever Super Smile Savers event on Saturday, February 24 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers provided free dental evaluations, sealants, SDF and Fluoride varnish applications to children ages 6-16 at the event, along with plenty of educational information focusing on healthy oral care. Children were also treated to face painting and a visit with the Tooth Fairy.

In recognition and celebration of Black History Month, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks movie was shown at the Grandin Theatre on Feb. 27.

The CFMH leadership, staff and Incident Command Team, conducted a Tornado Drill on March 7th to coincide with the state Tornado drill. Our Incident Command team and our Safety/Emergency Manager Betty Underwood provided on site instructions, suggestions, asked questions of staff and provided an excellent learning environment to prepare our staff for such an event. 

After the drill, a post drill discussion was carried out with the entire Incident Command Team and leadership. Kudo's to everyone for conducting a very successful Tornado Drill. 

Jeff Rutig was very helpful in getting a prior authorization done for a patient over the weekend in the outpatient setting. This patient had a serious infection that could have led to hospitalization and possible death. By going above and beyond, he helped save this patients life. Very thankful.

The Blue Ridge Family Medicine practice was recognized recently for outstanding achievement in quality metrics.

CFMH played host to Ferrum College for a Town Hall question and answer session today. We are very fortunate to have Ferrum College right here in our back yard. Ferrum College offers many courses of study including a School of Nursing and Allied Health Program that provides Majors, Minors and Certificates. Our Leadership team and staff asked questions and received answers about courses of study, admission, tuition, scholarships, etc.

The Department of Medicine celebrated the second cohort of mentors and mentees in the Mentorship Matters program at Medical Grand Rounds on February 9. This team-based program includes a curriculum focused on career development delivered in a virtual format and is led by Dr. Rebecca Pauly and Dr. Sarah Harendt.
