Infectious Diseases pharmacist Lauren McDaniel was caring for a patient with ocular syphilis and a true penicillin allergy. Since penicillin is the drug of choice for this critical infection, a desensitization protocol was needed in order for the patient to receive the preferred antibiotic agent. Lauren developed a 15-dose desensitization plan starting at one-millionth of the standard dose. Congratulations to our Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital team for completing the first case on their daVinci® Robot, the first robotic surgery to be performed in Franklin County/Rocky Mount! The teams completed three general surgery cases on Thursday, September 5th in one of CFMH’s newly renovated operating rooms. Robotic surgical systems such as the da Vinci are designed to allow surgeons to use their exceptional skills in the most effective way possible.
Time is of the essence when CPR is needed. I want to recognize a group of people who truly exonerate Teamwork. Sunday, September 1, a patient was brought to the ED by private vehicle unresponsive with no vital signs. Courtney Graham in patient access immediately called a Rapid Response to the hospital entrance. Within seconds the team of Matthew Ratliff (CP), RN's Jenna Duty, Jenifer Duty, Robin Stanley, and Larry Rose, Clinical Assistant AJ, Radiologic Technologist, Terri Brewster, Cardiopulmonary RRT Tracy Hash, and ED physician Dr. Whitty began CPR in the parking lot.
I just wanted to thank and acknowledge Lark's work yesterday, as she helped the nursing staff navigate some Epic changes to insulin administration on the Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry unit. She was knowledgeable, patient, and kind as she assisted them with this new process.
Carilion Clinic teams across a variety of departments came together to be able to provide a brand new Grow Our Own Talent program, Medical Assistant – Certified Applicant! Those in this program will go to Virginia Western Community College in the morning and in the afternoons have specialized hands-on training at Carilion! The tuition for VWCC is paid by Carilion and trainees are full-time employees eligible for benefits while they are gaining the knowledge, skills, and expertise to become certified as a Medical Assistant!

Caroline Booth of the Cardiology Department has been volunteering with the Healing Arts Program for over 5 months, completing 100 hand-drawn designs for the popular watercolor kits. We're so grateful for Caroline's contribution and artistry!
If you have been into Tanglewood, ION, or the Cancer Center/Rehab building recently, you may have noticed the new addition of Ronald McDonald tab top collection houses! Thank you to a collaboration with Robins & Morton, we were able to have three more houses built to place in these buildings and collect soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald house. Thank you to Karrie Moses, Kaitlyn Costa, Lisa Dishner, and Erika Trinkle in your help in making this possible.
How do I participated in this program?
Thank you to Scott, David, and Chris we were able to get not just one but two patients who belong to the same facility to there facility that would have other wise cost the patient out of pocket. Thanks to our police here at Franklin who are always willing to help we where able to get the patients back instead of them waiting a long while and paying a high out of pocket. Carilion Police Officer Ben Farmer is trained to handle anything, and this week, "anything" included parking dozens of cars for patients and guests at Carilion New River Medical Center. Due to staffing shortages in Guest Services, Carilion police were called in for assistance.
