October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time dedicated to enhancing the understanding of digital security among individuals and organizations alike. In a world where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, from personal devices to enterprise systems, the need for cybersecurity awareness cannot be overlooked.
On Tuesday September 24th, Carilion held its first ever Fall Open House for Roanoke City, Roanoke County, and Salem City students and their families where they were invited to come to Riverside IV to learn more about different health care careers and how to get involved with Carilion. Over 100 people engaged with and/or attended the event. Those that came in person left happy, interested in healthcare careers, and more knowledgable of the ways they can interact with Carilion, making the event a huge success!

As we all know, hurricane Helene has taken a toll on Southwest Virginia. However, it was no match for the hospital crew working on Saturday, September 28th at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital. With no power, no internet, and no phone services, we tackled a busy day during a chaotic situation. We had to go " OLD SCHOOL " trying to take care of very sick patients without our day-to-day luxury technology. I have never seen people come together and work through such a physically and mentally exhausting day.... but we did it!
Penny Shelton, Peer Recovery Specialist, at CTCH collaborated with Southwest Virginia Community Health's New Day Recovery and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for National Recovery Day. The first annual "Walk to Recovery" was held at Lincolnshire Park in Tazewell. We are so proud to offer Peer Recovery Services in the Tazewell community and to work with our community partners to raise awareness about recovery.
Shout out to Breanna for helping in the department within her scope! She helped all day to transport patients, show them to the restroom, and gather them snacks, etc. Couldn't have done today without her :)
Thanks to the quick 'grouper' development Crystal Callaway and the Epic Rx team delivered for CAPS, time critical data mart development for the FY 25 Quality Plan remains on track. Two 'groupers' were delivered within just 10 days, which will make end-to-end development more streamlined and easy to maintain. A heartfelt THANK YOU from CAPS!

The CRMH retail and inpatient pharmacy teams collaborated to provide a tetanus vaccine to the Mill Mountain Zoo team for a newborn wallaby! Zoo staff contacted the lobby pharmacy, who reached out to ED pharmacist Jessica Schad for guidance. Jessica worked with pharmacy technician Pete Buback, resident Jared Milbert, and manager Christine Pujol Rooks to coordinate delivery of a tetanus vaccine for use. Thank you for supporting our community, including the zoo animals!

Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death. It's the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals, including Carilion.
