A big thank you to Captain Paul King for taking the time to meet with preschoolers at Cedarwood Preschool as part of First Responder Education Day. He went above and beyond to build community, introducing kids to law enforcement and helping to ensure they’re comfortable with police officers. His youngest was in attendance, and it was great to see all of his son’s classmates enjoying the visit.

I want to shout out a HUGE thank you to Kayleigh Kelch, RN in ED @ CNRVMC. A few weeks ago I was slammed with a bunch of new orders for labs, fluids, and antibiotics for several different patients. I felt like I was "drowning" and was trying to get caught up. Kayleigh came over to me and said that she was going to help me get caught up with my medications and my fluids on several of my patients. She took the initiative and started my IV fluids and antibiotics on several of my patients to help me to get caught up. She was such a great help to me and showed awesome team work.

I had two difficult situations with patients in the mental health/psychiatric unit. Carolyn Fields, RN, and Erin Welch, RN, helped me immediately. They were helpful in defusing the situation in a professional and caring manner. An example of the wonderful nurses and nursing care they provide. Dr. Vora also helped in this situation quickly and is appreciated for his communication skills.

Monique Jefferson is our VAD program's "heart and soul" (pun intended).  She is in her element, providing countless hours of education to patients, staff of all disciplines, community providers, and EMS providers well beyond the walls of CRMH.  This year's inaugural simulation events, in collaboration with Emergency Medicine, were a huge success. Monique consistently receives stellar feedback on her teaching style and methods.  Thank you, Monique, for your friendly personality, expertise, longevity of service, and passion!  You are appreciated every day.

Experts from law-enforcement, public health, medical and related fields gathered to address strategies in combating our region’s opioid epidemic. Carilion Mental Health’s Annie Ickes, DO, took part in a panel discussion titled 'Big Bet Against Overdoses,' focusing on public mental health and the healthcare community’s response to the overdose crisis. It was held in Huntington, West Virginia, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and facilitated by the McChrystal Group. Great work, Dr. Ickes!

On October 3rd, Carilion Clinic CVI staff played in a charity softball game to raise money for the American Heart Association. Raising over 1,600 dollars.

RN Kaetlyn Sluss from the Oncology floor took the time to leave the floor and come to the ER to help access a port for a patient after the ER staff had issues gaining access. Thank you for making this patient comfortable and helping us provide exceptional care! Your willingness to go above and beyond is greatly appreciated by us and the patient!!!
