Pharmacist Lauren McDaniel coordinates penicillin desensitization for critical eye infection
Infectious Diseases pharmacist Lauren McDaniel was caring for a patient with ocular syphilis and a true penicillin allergy. Since penicillin is the drug of choice for this critical infection, a desensitization protocol was needed in order for the patient to receive the preferred antibiotic agent. Lauren developed a 15-dose desensitization plan starting at one-millionth of the standard dose. She communicated with pharmacy operations, providers, and nursing staff to make sure each desensitization dose was prepared, administered, and monitored safely. The patient was successfully desensitized and able to receive the full dose of the penicillin regimen needed for ocular syphilis, with improvement in vision due to the collaboration led by Lauren. Thanks Lauren for your expertise to ensure this patient received the best antibiotic for this infection!
