Meaningful Moments from the Holidays

This holiday season was filled with kindness, festivities, and lots of cheer. Here's a look at how our teams have been giving back and keeping the holidays merry! 

Spreading Kindness and Giving Back

• The CMC Hospitalists completed a food drive and a clothing drive, delivering warm clothes to a local shelter.
• RMH employees donated blood with The Blood Connection and welcomed 17 returning donors and 28 first-time donors.
• Olivia McGuinn, Mother/Baby PCT, handed out 100 cups of hot chocolate and snacks on the coldest day of the year. 
• Amber Clary, Velocity Care, made sure an unhoused patient had a place to stay in a hotel on the coldest night of the year. 
• The Education & Organizational Development team stuffed 200 ziplock bags with purchased snacks and colorfully hand-decorated lunch bags with motivational art and encouraging words for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House
• CVI collected 75 pounds of feminine hygiene products for donation to the Council of Community Services.
• CRMH and ION have collected a total of 136.5 pounds, 154,928 soda can tabs, for the Ronald McDonald House. 
• RSFM and SFMC collected 726 essential items, including blankets, scarves, socks, hats, gloves, jackets, and shoes, which were donated to The Least of These, the Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition, Family Promise, and the Rescue Mission Women and Children’s Center.

Festive Fun

• GMH celebrated the grand opening of its gift shop with a ribbon-cutting. 
• The Mental Health Morale Committee organized a holiday parade to spread holiday cheer throughout the inpatient and outpatient mental health building in Roanoke.
• Caroline Booth, Roanoke Cardiology Referral Coordinator, volunteered to hand-decorate ornaments for Lights of Love.
• The Digital Health team partnered with Amwell, Carilion’s virtual visit vendor, and Carilion’s Child Life Specialists to bring Santa Claus virtually to young patients.

Christmas Tree Cheer

• The 10M PCU crew decorated Christmas trees for their unit with everyday hospital items to spread laughter during the holiday season. 
• Carilion Hospice NRV and Carilion Hospice Roanoke placed a gnome-themed and butterfly-themed tree at The Inn at Blacksburg and at the Hotel Roanoke's Fashions for Evergreens.
• CNRV Medical Care Unit decorated their Christmas tree with shoe ornaments and collected shoes to donate to those in need.

Merry Maintenace 

• The Carilion Maintenance team kept everyone safe with the wintry weather by keeping parking lots and walkways clear. 
• Garrett Hafley and the maintenance team at CNRVMC did an exceptional job with snow removal in the parking lots and sidewalks, making it easier for both staff and patients to safely make it inside. 
• Glenn Hawkins and Dean Rakes, CRMH Maintenance, spotted a potential fire hazard at the end of their shift and prevented a potential disaster. 

Shining Achievements

• Carilion Clinic Home Care was named among Virginia Living Magazine's Best of 2025 - ranking number one in the category of Home Health Provider in Southwest Virginia. 
• The PICU celebrated 2 years without an unplanned extubation.
• Dr. Robert Brown was named 2025 Citizen of the Year.
