A #CarilionProud Year To Remember
What a year! Our 125th anniversary year was filled with teamwork and accomplishments that are bringing more access to care for our patients and improving the health of the communities we serve. Here's a look back at some of the highlights.
Winter
- Carilion Children’s Pediatric Neurosurgery expanded to Lynchburg so more patients can see a specialist without traveling.
- We expanded our Inpatient Clinical Trials and Research Program from CRMH to CNRV and CRBH.
- We distributed iPhones to inpatient clinical staff to improve workflow and communications on units.
- We ended the COVID-19 boarding pass process that began in 2020.
- Our Culinary Center launched a composting program that is expected to divert 30 tons of food waste each year. And our Franklin Road warehouse expanded its recycling efforts to include soft plastics, keeping more waste out of landfills.
- And we said goodbye to Tom Robertson, former president and CEO of Carilion Health System, who died on Friday, March 7.
Spring
- Our kidney transplant program was approved! It will be the only organ transplant program in the region, and we anticipate our first transplant will take place in 2026.
- We opened the expanded Emergency Department inside the Crystal Spring Tower at CRMH and the new McClanahan Garage.
- We introduced security screening measures to keep employees, patients and visitors safe.
- We began construction of the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center.
- We began working toward a joint venture partnership with Select Medical to oversee the new inpatient rehabilitation hospital we are planning.
- Meredith Burrow kicked off #CarilionProud week by thanking our employees who cared for her daughter.
- Fortune magazine named our organization to their yearly list of America’s Most Innovative Companies for the third year in a row.
- The Employee Art Show returned after a 3-year hiatus.
Summer
- After 5 years of construction and planning, we opened the full Crystal Spring Tower at CRMH, which is the new home for the Cardiovascular Institute.
- We announced that we raised $96 million toward our $100 million goal for the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center, and we invited the public to help us raise the final $4 million.
- We announced that we are planning to open our first freestanding Emergency Departments in Westlake and Daleville in 2027.
- The Virginia Division of Certificate of Public Need approved our application for a new 50-bed inpatient medical rehabilitation hospital in Roanoke.
- We opened a new Carilion Children’s location in the CFMH Medical Office Building.
- We partnered with Safe Haven Baby Boxes to install the first box in Virginia at CRMH.
- We partnered with Goodwill Industries of the Valleys and other community organizations to open Melrose Plaza—a new community center—in Northwest Roanoke.
- We were recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best-In-State Employers for 2025.
- We introduced new MyChart features—including self-sign up, eCheck-in and scheduling tools like Fast Pass—to give patients more convenience and control over their care.
- We were recognized by the Amercian Medical Association as a Joy in Medicine organization for our efforts to enhance joy and professional fulfillment for physicians and all clinicians.
Fall
- After 2 years of planning, Nexus went live and we began using Workday, UKG Pro and the expanded Employee Center. We also began using Elsevier for clinical skills validation.
- We surpassed our $100 million campaign goal by raising over $105 million for the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center, including more than $7.7 million from your contributions.
- We announced a new fundraising goal to bring proton therapy to the Cancer Center, supported by a $17.5 million leadership gift from the Taubman family.
- We introduced bedside metal-detecting wanding at CTCH, CGCH and CFMH to keep employees, patients and visitors safe.
- We opened the renovated Emergency Department waiting room at CRMH.
- We opened a new gift shop at CGCH.
