A New Era of Clinical Communication
We are introducing a new communication tool for inpatient and Emergency Department staff within our hospital facilities. Designated staff in these departments will receive iPhones to help increase communication efficiency. This initiative aims to provide a secure, integrated system that enhances workflow and patient care.
Why iPhones?
Our frontline clinicians are constantly on the move. While Workstations on Wheels (W.O.W. carts) offer full EMR access, they are not always the most convenient option. Having a smart mobile device at hand will be a game changer, providing immediate access to essential apps and communication tools.
At launch, each iPhone will include:
- PerfectServe – for clinical communication
- Interpreter App – for on-demand interpreter services
- Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and Authenticator – for email and collaboration
- UKG App – for scheduling and time management
- Imprivata Authenticator – for secure login
- Clock & Calculator – for quick access to essential tools
Initially, the camera and web browser will be disabled, but future updates will unlock QR code and barcode scanning, wound photography, and more. Plans are also in place to introduce Epic’s Rover, which will enable mobile medication administration, real-time patient documentation, and workflow organization—all within the iPhone.
Enhanced nurse call integration
Currently, our nurse-call system is integrated with Spectralink phones at three hospitals, allowing patient calls to go directly to nursing teams. With this project, we will transition from Spectralink to iPhones and expand the integration across all sites, further streamlining patient care.
An important note
New protective cases are being added to clinical iPhones to prevent damage and provide clear identification that these devices are for work use. Staff are reminded that these iPhones are for on-duty use only. While they have cellular backup, they should not be used for personal activities outside of work.
This rollout marks a significant step forward in enhancing mobility, efficiency, and patient care. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to expand this platform!
