Whether it's for summer camps, sports or even back-to-school, Carilion Children's is encouraging parents and caregivers to schedule their children's well-checks, sports physicals and immunizations now. The end of the current school year is in sight and summer is upon us; it’s never too early to plan!

Why the Rush?

Last year, our general pediatric clinics experienced a backlog of appointments that caused some children to delay the start of the school year.

Whether during a child’s outpatient visit or a hospital stay, our child life specialists help patients and families with coping strategies through play, self-expressive activities, age-appropriate medical preparation and education. Each of these are intentionally designed to help both the child and family gain a better understanding of medical procedures, reducing their stress and fear of the unknown during a difficult time.

Community Care: A Bridge to Primary Care

For those transitioning their care or searching for a primary care provider, our Community Care practice might be a good fit.

We created this care model for patients who are in need of primary care services, but are unable to get immediate access to a provider. For example, patients who were recently discharged from the hospital and need to schedule a follow-up visit. We may be able to assist patients with finding a Carilion Clinic primary care provider.

There are many things we can do to foster an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected and valued—including addressing each other by our preferred names and personal pronouns.

Our LGBTQ+ Allies Employee Resource Group (ERG), in collaboration with other ERGs and the Inclusion Council, have worked to create some guidance on including preferred names and personal pronouns in our email signatures.
