When there’s a cardiac arrest emergency, CPR is the patient’s last chance for survival. That’s why patients suffering a cardiac arrest must receive the highest quality CPR possible—and why we’ve been gradually rolling out a better way to learn CPR across our system.

Our Great Catch Awards recognize employees who identify and report potential errors or process issues before they can harm patients. Reporting these great catches helps us improve our systems and processes across Carilion to keep patients safe. We gave a number of Great Catch awards during the past few months:

• Ashley Cates, R.N., CTCH, recognized that a patient with pneumonia, who was going to be roomed with another patient, did not have a CBC ordered.

Work is progressing at the site of the future Crystal Spring Tower.

A few weeks ago we shared a video tour inside the Crystal Spring Tower. Now we have two new videos that show the 7th and 8th floors within the tower. And these videos have a special feature—you can use your mouse to adjust the viewpoint of the camera, allowing you to see a full 360-degree view from the tour guide's perspective.

In January, we opened the application process to accept the first participants for the new YES (Your Efforts, Supported) program. After careful deliberation and an extensive selection process, five employees were selected from over 100 applicants to participate in the program that will help further their education to pursue career goals.

From kids to early teens all the way up to young adults, patients in the 10-26 age group is at a unique time in their lives where their bodies, minds and environments are growing and changing quickly. Our Adolescent and Student Health Clinic is well-equipped to meet their needs and provide specialized care as they develop, and we're the only clinic like this in our area to offer these services for our community.

Roger Roper has been hired as the next vice president of Family and Community Medicine. His first day will be Monday, May 22.

Steve Arner has been promoted to president in addition to his role as chief operating officer while Nancy Howell Agee continues as CEO.

“Steve is an outstanding leader, and we are delighted to promote him,” said Nancy. “He has a strong work ethic and cares deeply about our patients, our teams and our work together caring for the communities we serve.” 

We are beginning a project to replace our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, moving to a system with a more modern user interface. We have selected Workday as our next ERP software partner and are targeting a summer 2025 go-live.

We have seen a resurgence of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-related phone scams. Callers use fake names and badge numbers but may also use the names of well-known DEA officials. Sometimes, scammers will spoof legitimate DEA phone numbers.
