People with disabilities make up the largest minority group in the United States. Despite this, there are plenty of misconceptions surrounding the topic.

As we celebrate the 34th anniversary (July 26, 2024) of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we want to shed light on the law and how it impacts you, your co-workers and our patients. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and ensures equal opportunity in many settings. It affects employment, state and local government, public accommodations and telecommunications.

Our Great Catch Awards honor employees who detect and report potential errors or process issues before they can impact patients. By identifying these great catches, we enhance our systems and processes across Carilion to keep patients safe. We have presented several Great Catch awards in the past few months:

Untangle Wellness is a new event series that creates opportunities for connection and fun at work, through activities such as expressive arts, mindfulness, yoga and more! Events are open to all Carilion employees and conveniently located at the Tanglewood facility.

This morning, we announced that former Ambassador to Romania Nicholas F. Taubman and his wife, Jenny, have generously donated $25 million to expand our cancer program and establish the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center on our Riverside Campus in Roanoke.

Hand hygiene is the best way to prevent and reduce healthcare-transmitted infections. Thanks to your help, we have a new frog mascot to include on posters, articles and more as a visual reminder of proper hand hygiene. Read below to see how this fun acronym helps us to keep proper hand hygiene top of mind!  

After analysis and careful consideration, we are partnering with Ensemble Health to oversee our revenue cycle operations.  

Around 780 Carilion employees who support revenue cycle operations—all those involved in this move—will be offered an opportunity to become Ensemble associates in comparable roles. This morning, leaders notified the employees who are being asked to transition. 

With much appreciation for her years of service, join us in congratulating Vice President of Community Health and Development Shirley Holland on her upcoming retirement on Aug. 9.
