On 6/21/21, an employee who was pregnant came to CFMH Employee Health for a Tdap vaccination.   Upon review of vaccine questions and consent, Jessica found that the consent as well as vaccine questions stated that an employee who is pregnant should not receive the vaccine.  After conferring with Employee Health System Leadership we found that Tdap is now considered a vaccine that all pregnant women should receive during pregnancy.   Upon review of the Tdap protocol it was discovered that the protocol does allow administration of the

Thanks to TL Cash, LPN in the CRBH ED for taking the time to thoroughly check his medications prior to administration.  TL was mixing Cefepime IV administration and noticed that the medication was discolored.  He called the pharmacy to verify and the pharmacist told him this medication should never be discolored and that a new vial of Cefepime needed to be used for administration.  Congrats to TL for speaking up with a concern and ensuring the patient received the right medication!

Garber DNP, RN, NEA-BC (James Madison University), and Beth Epstein PhD, RN, HEC-C, FAAN (University of Virginia) published The Nurse Manager's Experience of Moral Distress in the June 2021 issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration. This paper reflects a qualitative descriptive study of 19 nurse managers from 5 healthcare institutions in Virginia.

Congratulations to Ellen Dalton Ward and Dr. Cindy Ward for receiving 3rd place in the Research track at the 2021 National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) Annual Congress for their poster entitled "Impact of the Influenza Vaccination on the Orthopedic Surgical Patient". This study was completed as Ellen's Nursing Research Fellowship, and Dr. Cindy Ward was Ellen's mentor. The study resulted in a practice change leading to more orthopedic surgery patients being offered the influenza vaccination.

The Accounting Shared Services, Intake Team, recently hosted an online lunch cooking class.

Siddhi Patel did an amazing job teaching the team how to make yellow lentil Dal, while also conducting a language lesson. This was the first time most members of the team had cooked with Indian spices and eaten Dal.

While interviewing a patient prior to CT scan with contrast, Laura StClair discovered a new metformin containing medication, Syngardy, that was not on the list of metformin-containing medications that are checked prior to administering contrast.  It was important that the patient discontinue this medication two days after receiving contrast to maintain kidney function.  Thanks to Laura's attention to detail, the list has been updated with this medication and the patient was kept safe!  Great work, Laura!!

CT Technologist, Sam Eaton, is going the extra mile to ensure the RIGHT PATIENT gets the RIGHT EXAM.  This is always important, but extremely so in CT, as delivering a dose of radiation to the patient is involved.  The patient recently had a name change and Sam picked up on the different names.  While this is still confusing, as the original documentation will have the previous name, TSG manager Kari Spradlin states the original names are contained in EPIC under aliases.  GREAT WORK SAM!!!
