Greg Hamm has the heart of a servant, which makes him an amazing human. He cares so much for his co-workers, his community and his patients. This week was no different. Greg was working Tazewell ED when he received a phone call from a concerned family member. She shared with him that she had called all the ERs around before calling Tazewell. Because Greg did what he always does and was kind and caring, she chose to bring her loved one to Tazewell for care. Greg consistently goes above and beyond for our patients, while remaining humble. Thank you, Greg, for all that you do!

Dr. Craig Turner, Cardiologist at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital has retired. Dr. Turner, a very beloved and caring community provider took care of this community for many years. He will be terribly missed. We are all very proud of the legacy that he leaves behind and wish him luck as he moves on to the next chapter in his life. 

Brenda Mills at Carilion Clinic Fort Defiance jumped into action when a patient fell in the parking lot due to hypoxia. Brenda was very attentive and helpful to the patient until EMS arrived.

Though their specialty occasionally brings some messy challenges, the Carilion Children's Pediatric Urology team, (consisting of Dr. Christopher Bayne, Jessica Holloway, PA, Jennifer Gardner, MA, and Rachael Ross, APS) continues to prove their persistence, dedication, and compassion. 

I want to give a shout out to Haley Laney! One evening we had a young patient that needed a ct scan. He had gotten hit in the head and really needed it. He cried and didn't want to lay down on the CT table. Some of us tried and tried to talk him into it but he wasn't having it. Haley came in and talked to him for probably 20-30 minutes trying to reassure him that it wasn't going to hurt in any way. She even got her phone out and showed him pictures of her CT scan to show him what his pictures would look like. Slowly, he began to seemed more and more at ease.

Earlier this week Frank Bryant and Ricky McKinney saw a patient and guest on the side of the parking garage.  They had a flat tire and needed to get back home.  The car they were driving did not have a spare tire or a lug wrench.  Frank jacked up the car and Ricky went to buy a lug wrench and new tire for the stranded driver.  After the job was done the patient and guest were very thankful for this kind act and soon they were on the way home.  Thanks Frank and Ricky.

On March 8th my husband Tim had spine surgery. His room was on 9 West. BRI HOBBS was his nurse on at least 2 different days.  She was very diligent about keeping his pain under control.  Unlike the night shift which resulted in an additional day in the hospital. We appreciated her compassionate caring personality.

We have decided to do a bulletin board welcoming our new team members. Great way to make our team members feel welcome!!! 

Most of the weekend Mental Health Therapists at Roanoke Rehab hold full-time jobs on the weekdays, in addition to the shifts they dedicate to our department over the weekend! 

Recently, one of our Weekend Warriors, Mia Hancock-Keeling was nominated the Virginia School Social Worker of the Year! Mia is an amazing worker at our rehab, doing her best to address patient needs while still keeping up with documentation. We have been lucky to have Mia on our Team since 08/22/2022, and, are SO excited to learn that her awesomeness is being recognized in her day job as well!

Six years ago in 2019, the Society of Hospitalist Medicine announced the inaugural National Hospitalist Day would be held on the first Thursday of every March! If you know Hospitalists, you know that if it is only celebrated one day, you are going to miss half of your Hospitalist team! Therefore, the hospitalist teams at Carilion celebrate at least 2 days to capture all their diligent, hard-working team members.
