During the set up for an event at Dr. Pepper Park this week, staff from The Center for Simulation, Research and Patient Safety (Jeff Lawson, Heather Matthews, Nate Jones, etc.) jumped into action and provided care to a pedestrian who was suffering a medical emergency. Afterward, Marie Creech, PA reached out to Chaplain services, and Keith Little came over to provide support to our team as well as the staff and vendors of Dr. Pepper Park. It was a sad situation, but the actions of our Carilion employees makes me proud to work with such amazing people.

Carilion's CRMH Parking Assistant Team is nothing short of extraordinary! Jeff, Clarence, and Ricky all opened doors for our patients, assisted patients getting in and out of their vehicles and were nothing other than kind and consideration in every interaction I witnessed, even in almost 100-degree weather! The Team was constantly communicating making sure no one was left not being assisted and were greeting every person coming in and out of building. This team is doing an amazing job, and I am grateful for their assistance!

Mark Atkins took a Chest X-ray of an autistic, Non-verbal toddler and the mother left this Patient Press Ganey comment complimenting him:

For those of you who haven’t heard about Camp Too Sweet, it is a week-long overnight camp sponsored by Carilion Clinic each summer and is offered exclusively to kids with diabetes, mainly those with Type 1 (T1). Even if you have heard about this camp, what you probably don’t realize is the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes each year to pull this amazing program together – prior to the camp and of course, during the camp – and the incredibly positive and lasting impact the camp has on the children’s lives.

The DAISY award celebrates exceptional nurses for the care and kindness they provide to patients, families, and co-workers. Launched at the beginning of FY24, Carilion’s outpatient/ambulatory departments present the third quarter DAISY Award to Shea Boyd, LPN, General Surgery.

She was nominated by a Carilion colleague who shared the following story:

On 7/8/ 24 in the evening hours at FMH, Police Officer Chris Stovall was escorting an employee to their car when the employee had a sudden health emergency and fell. Officer Stovall rendered aid and called for medical assistance. The staff member was taken to the ER and treated.

The area where the employee parked was off property in a low traveled area for that time of the night. Thankfully Stovall was there to assist the staff member.

Michele Richardson in Urogynecology is always willing to help patients and co-workers in any way they need. Michele helped a patient get to her car today by rolling her in a wheelchair from her desk on the second floor out to her car in the parking lot. Michele has true compassion for others, and it is a privilege to work with her!

Mike Moorman of the 4 South PACU received the Bee Award on June 18th, 2024. Mike's hire date with our health system was June 18th, 1979, and it just seemed very fitting to celebrate him on his work anniversary and presenting him with another Bee Award on the same day! Mike has worked diligently for 45 years and continues to be an exemplarily employee! He is always a smiling face in the hallway and checking on everyone. He is a wealth of Carilion history and knowledge. :-) 

Bee Nomination Story: 

I want to give a shout-out to Kim Jones, ED Social Worker for facilitating a safe and appropriate discharge for a very difficult placement. She was able to build rapport with the patient and help the patient meet the criteria to make it to their desired placement. The family was also very appreciative of Kim's extensive efforts, and CRMH was able to avoid an unnecessary admission. Great job Kim!
