Karen Mulkey has been employed with Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital for an amazing 30 years. Karen started out in ICU then went to the Emergency Room. Karen is now in the role of Infection Control and Community Outreach. Karen works so hard to make sure that our small community gets the same opportunities as bigger communities.

Congratulations to the CNRV ED, Radiology and Pharmacy team for an outstanding achievement in delivering thrombolytic therapy within 45 minutes, an exceptional example of coordinated, high-quality stroke care.

May 2026, a patient presenting with right-sided facial droop and weakness received rapid assessment and treatment. The team moved efficiently from arrival at 9:31 to TNK administration at 10:26, achieving a Door-to-Needle time of 45 minutes.

Cancer Therapy - Theranostic meeting in Roanoke coming up soon - Novel therapy - 6/26/2026

Carilion / Virginia Tech bringing advance cancer therapy research to Roanoke hosted by Fralin Biomedical Institute on 6/26.  This event is enabled by a Mars Shot grant awarded to Carilion to support education on Theranostic Cancer Treatment in Appalachia.  If you are a student, nurse, physician, researcher, patient, PA, or healthcare worker interested in new ways to treat cancer come and participate with us for this free all-day event within person and virtual offering. 

Dr Muhammad Yousaf - Physician Recognition Award - June 2026

Dr. Muhammad Yousaf, a fellowship-trained headache specialist in neurology, has led the development of several collaborative initiatives to improve care for patients with complex and refractory headache disorders. He has taken a leadership role in teaching and mentoring advanced practice providers (APPs) and neurology residents, extending his expertise to benefit a broader patient population.

This week, we proudly welcomed 72 S.O.A.R. (Seeking Opportunities, Aspirations, & Results) Nurse Externs to Carilion, representing 20 nursing programs. This incredible group includes 35 rising seniors participating in our 8-week summer pathway and 37 students in our flex pathway.
