Wednesdays are busy days for the x-ray staff at Salem Family Practice PCA because we also do a full day of bone denisities.. Betty T Spurlock was the xray tech doing the bone densities last Wednesday. While she was finishing paperwork on a patient, the phone rang in the bone density room. The call was from a cardiology patient that was seen earlier in the day ( at the Salem office ). The patient was an elderly gentleman that had lost his phone and wanted to check to see if he had lost it as his cardiology appointment.

Lisa Sutliff, RTR(CT) is retiring today, July 1, 2024 after 36+ years with Carilion.  She is a graduate of the Roanoke Memorial School of Radiologic Technology and continued her career with Carilion working the last 17 years at the Daleville CT location.  She is an amazing technologist and friend who cares for her patients and co-workers like her family.   Congratulations on your retirement-you will be greatly missed!

The employees at the Center for Simulation, Research and Patient Safety ramped up their recycling efforts in April 2023 by working with Republic to transition their recycling container from just cardboard to a mixed recycling container (cardboard, paper, boxboard, aluminum, plastics # 1 and 2). The team set a goal to recycle 1,000 pounds and they did it in one year! Wow! This was primarily made up of cardboard, plastics, paper and soda cans from the building's operations.

  On June 27 2024, Officer Ryan Pritts was notified by ED staff at RMH that a patient was missing, and they were concerned for their welfare.  Officer Pritts checked the security camera system and discovered that the patient had gone to the rest room in an area of the ED that is not used frequently due to the construction.  Officer Pritts responded and discovered the door locked and after receiving no response from anyone inside, forced the door open and discovered the patient having a medical emergency.  Officer Pritts and medical staff rendered aid and the patient rece

In June, Carilion Children's Pediatric unit celebrated 1 year without a fall. In 2022, Pediatrics had a fall rate of 1.35. In 2023, they dropped the rate to 0.76 and has dropped the rate to 0 for this fiscal year. Congratulations to Pediatrics for your commitment in keeping our patients safe.

This week 10M PCU Operations Manager Brooke Garcia and Nursing Practice Improvement Facilitator Robin Woody got creative and held a "HAPI Escape Room" and role play scenario.  This fun experience brought the staff in to have a little fun, as well as help identify additional ways to keep our patients safe and to prevent hospital acquired pressure injuries. 

On Friday, June 7th Rosalie Faila took the Oath of Allegiance and officially became a United States Citizen!

A week ago, I found myself on the other side of the "rails" so to speak. It was then I realized how valuable as well as how much I appreciated my coworkers.  From Point Desk to E-Hall everyone was top notch unequivocally.  I was disoriented, frightened, watching everything around me as if it was in slow motion. Callie, Emma-Grace, Danielle, Mikayla, Colleen, Dr. Grayson and Dr. Moore THANK YOU.  Everyone's swift action gave me back the breath of life, literally.  I am forever grateful; you are my heroes.  

Today, Kathy Jones is celebrating 40 years with Carilion! Please help us shower her with love and gratitude that she deserves. Kathy goes above and beyond every day in the Transfer Center, and we are very lucky to have her as a member of our team! 

7 MTN is the primary PCU for structural heart patients and the only PCU to take TAVR patients. In May 2022 we started taking post-TAVR patients with a Transvenous Pacemaker (TVP). Prior to this the patients with a TVP post TAVR were being transferred to the ICU. With guidance from the structural heart team, 7 MPCU nurses underwent extensive training in preparation for this which included 1:1 education, cornerstone education, and competency validation. We recently celebrated our 2-year anniversary in taking TAVR patients with TVPs!
