A huge shout-out to our simulation lab staff and partnering GME faculty for all their hard work done this summer! We have successfully conducted large courses related to central line insertion and ultrasound-guided procedures for incoming residents from several specialties (ED, Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine). It takes a lot of planning and coordination, and we are so thankful for the dedicated efforts, specifically from Dr. Julie Morris and Dr. Olumide A. (Lu) Ojeifo!

We celebrated with sweet treats to recognize the inpatient team and their excellent care to keep our patients infection free.

   The Carilion Clinic Gynecologic Oncology Division achieved national recognition in the 2024 US News and World Report Best Hospitals ranking as High Performing in Gynecologic Cancer Surgery.  I want to give a huge shout out our amazing providers, Dr. Erin Saks, Dr. Shannon Armbruster and Dr. Janet Osborne for working so diligently to improve the lives of women who are fighting one of the toughest battles of theirs.  Thank you for your hard work and dedication!!

I want to brag about 7W...

Our mission states: Improve the health of the communities we serve. I would like to give a great big "WOW" shoutout for Rae aka Amanda Lafferty-Markham who is a RN here in the ED at CRMH on the weekend team. Rae is always there to help out and provide assistance in every call for help. Rae steps up to assist and help out her team whenever she is asked and never refers to a patient as "Not my patient". This past weekend in G unit we were covered in one critical care situation after another.

A patient's visitor had pointed out to me that the railing holding the curtain from the ceiling in the ER room was coming off the ceiling due to several of the screws missing from the fixture. I had attempted to put in a work order online, but before I could Al Goss from maintenance at RMH was walking through the ER, I explained the situation and within minutes he returned to the ER with his tools and took care of the situation, avoiding any safety risks! I appreciate Al's willingness to do what needed to be done on a seconds notice with no prior notification!!!

  On July 2nd, Security Officer Breyon Mayo was heading home from his shift and just leaving the parking garage when he observed a female who appeared to be in distress.  He stopped to offer assistance and discovered that the woman's friend in the vehicle was in need of emergency medical treatment due to a possible overdose.  Breyon immediately summoned aid from other officers and EMS while rendering what aid he could until additional help arrived.  We are very proud of Breyon's efforts and dedication, proving that we may be off the clock, but we are never off duty.&nbsp

A recent Hospice patient has wanted to learn to play the guitar for the last 40 years but has never been able to due to a stroke. He had a long career as a Navy engineer.  Over several weeks, CeCe Varnum MT-BC, Hospice Music Therapist assisted him with adapting a slide (made from old medication bottle lids!) to compensate for his left-hand deficit. By helping this patient meet his musical goals, CeCe demonstrated the Carilion value of commitment. He is now able to play the guitar! Way to go CeCe!

Congratulations to Stevee Johnson and Samantha Stepp on being selected to each receive a CNRV Nursing Scholarship. Both Stevee and Samantha have demonstrated their commitment to Carilion and their curiosity to learn more! We appreciate all they do for our patients, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for each of them.
