For the past three consecutive months, the Emergency Department at CNRV has successfully met our goal of collecting blood cultures before administering antibiotics to septic patients. Even more exciting- for the first time in our hospital’s history, we hit the national average for SEP-1 compliance in June! This is a huge milestone and testament to the care, attention, and professionalism each staff member brings every day. We celebrated with coffee and doughnuts to show a small token of appreciation. Great work to the ED team at CNRV! 

A home health patient who was receiving remote patient monitoring (Daily interaction with technology to record BP, heart rate, weights, etc) was alerting in our centralized telemonitoring center a low BP, i.e. 70/40's.  This patient is dealing with many complex illnesses and phone calls placed by the central monitoring nurse in attempts to complete a more thorough virtual assessment were not being answered .  Rhonda Ihlenberg, monitoring nurse, reached out via perfect serve to Angela Roberts, OT who was scheduled to visit.

Massive thanks to Nate Jones, Director of Business Strategy for Human Factors, Simulation, and Usability at the Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety. Nate has quietly coordinated and overseen the simulations and evaluation of Clinical Systems Testing (CST) at the Crystal Springs Tower. All the while, holding down his ongoing duties to Human Factors, coordinating the new hire of a Usability Director, acting Director of Simulation while we were hiring, while still being a functional father and husband. Nate, your efforts were tireless and unremitting. No duty was neglected.

I would like to recognize our Rehab Aide at CFMH Outpatient Rehab clinic, Tiffany Mountcastle, for motivating our patients. She does this by listening to them and encouraging them along their rehab journey. She also inspires a smile from them by her creative bulletin board. This bulletin board is located just inside the entrance to our clinic. I have seen many patients walk away from that board with a smile on their face. Thanks Tiffany for creating a positive space for our patients to rehab and heal!

Lindy Clark, RN heard the monitor alarm and noticed that a patient was in a 16-beat run of VTACH.  The patient's nurse was attending to another patient at the time, so Lindy entered this patient's room, assessed the patient, and discovered that the patient was having stroke-like symptoms.  A stroke alert and a rapid response were called, and a CT was performed which showed a significant blockage.  Tele-Neuro was consulted and determined that it was appropriate to administer TNK.  Patient was transferred shortly there after to a higher level of care to obtain endovascular

CRBH would like to recognize Carol Penney, RN for her recent Great Catch.  Carol was reviewing a patient's chart and noticed a discrepancy with the patient's code status.  Carol noticed that the patient was listed recently as a DNR, but was currently listed as a full code at CRBH.  Carol notified the attending provider and the provider had a discussion with the patient to ensure that we had the correct code status listed in chart.  Thank you for your diligence and for your commitment to our patients!  

Congratulations to team members of the Stroke Program at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital! They were recently honored with the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines® Stroke GOLD PLUS award--including Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Advanced Therapy recognition. This GOLD PLUS level reflects at least 24 consecutive months of meeting rigorous quality-of-care measures for stroke patients. Previously, the team achieved the SILVER level, which required 12 months of consistent performance.

I wanted to take a moment to share a wonderful message I received from someone in administration yesterday who was seen in our office. It was a simple note of appreciation, but it truly speaks volumes about the incredible work our team is doing here in Vinton.

"I had a nice visit for my physical today. Who is your new male HAA at check in? I want to mention him by name when I complete the survey. He thanked me for checking in online 😊 I also like Dr. Montalvo’s nurse/MOT, Becca. You have a great team there!"

Congratulations to Shanay McDonald on receiving the first BEE Award at CTCH!  Shanay was nominated by a peer for her courage and commitment to our patients and team during a winter storm in February.
