I want to express my warmest wishes and deepest gratitude to Dr. Francis Farrell as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement. Dr. Farrell will be officially retiring from the Office of Research and Development at Carilion, with his last day being September 19. Throughout his distinguished career at Carilion, Dr. Farrell has been an invaluable asset to our Office of Research and Development.

Taking a stand for infection prevention

Jared Coccia, RN from CRMH, 8MICU demonstrated vigilance and commitment to patient and staff safety. He initiated a crucial conversation in reminding a staff member to wash their hands with soap and water after exiting a Contact Special Enteric isolation room. The staff member replied that nothing was touched in the room, but RN Coccia was adamant about the importance of maintaining proper protocols.

Forbes Names Carilion Among America’s Best Employers by State

Carilion Clinic has been recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best-In-State Employers for 2025. According to its website, Forbes worked with a market research firm to survey 160,000 workers at companies with at least 500 workers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., asking participants to assess their employers. 

VHHA Virginians Speak of Up for Safety Honorable Mention- Laken Green PCT CGCH

Laken Green was awarded an honorable mention from the VHHA Virginians Speak Up for Safety Award after she identified that the existing seizure pads were incompatible with the newly installed hospital beds.  This observation enabled the system to evaluate alternative products to enhance patient safety.

CGCH Celebrates 75 years of Service & opening of Time Capsule from 2000

Carilion Giles Community Hospital celebrated 75 years of service to the community on August 22nd. Many former employees, physicians, Board members, and community members joined the celebration to reflect on the legacy and impact of CGCH. During the event, a time capsule from the year 2000 was opened.

Heather Spence, of the Franklin Hospice team, has been going above and beyond lately, taking care of some really tough patients with so much heart and patience. Even on the hardest days, she makes sure everyone has what they need and feels cared for. Her kindness, strength, and dedication don’t go unnoticed—we’re so lucky to have her, and her patients are too <3 

ICU Liberation Dashboard Team

Congratulations to the ICU Liberation Dashboard concept team who worked collaboratively over the last 5 years with multiple, outstanding Carilion services to see this project through to production. The platform provides real time ICU Liberation data to critical care teams to optimize individualized care to this complex population. Special thanks to the team members Vivek Balakrishnan, Karla West, Amy Lucas, Desiree Beasley, Dr. RC Keeley, and Dr. Emily Faulks. It is an honor to be a part of this team.
