Trauma Registry Professionals Day

Behind every trauma activation, every performance improvement initiative, and every verified trauma center is a group of professionals whose work often goes unseen – our Trauma Registry Professionals.

Pour it, stir it, and make it grand, then enjoy a “dirty soda” after washing your hands. Christina Lafon, Infection Preventionist, and Wendy Worrell, Manager of Nursing Excellence and Professional Governance, toured the facility and treated staff to a refreshing soda. Team members could choose from options such as the Germinator, Berry Clean, Biohazard Fizz, and Petri Punch. This creative, upbeat approach reinforced the importance of hand hygiene and its essential role in keeping patients safe.

"Dylan was attentive to every need, going above and beyond basic care. Dylan asked if a heated blanket was needed and it was brought and help arranged with a pillow. He even brough a warm blanket for my family staying after they fell asleep. Dyan is such a professional, always spoke kindly and positive throughout."

Carilion Clinic has been recognized for "Organizational Excellence in Coaching" by the International Federation of Coaching VA Charter Chapter.  This award recognized Carilion's efforts in executive, leadership, team, and group coaching across our system.  Kudos go out to all of our coaches across Carilion whether in E&OD, ILE, or embedded in a department.

CRBH would like to recognize Sonographer Leigh Jenkins, RDCS, RVT for a recent outstanding Great Catch.  Leigh was performing an echo on a patient when she discovered an aortic dissection. She immediately provided this information to the patient's nurse, Jessica Camden, RN, who then quickly took this information directly to the provider.  This Great Catch helped to save the patient's life! Outstanding work by Leigh and Jessica!  Thank you for your continual commitment to patient safety and thank you to the entire care team for acting quickly in this situation.

Recently, a patient I worked with as part of the Transitions Care Program was noted to have lost his medications while in the hospital.  He had gone through several transfers from one facility to another and then from one department to another at CNRVMC.  He was certain he had his medications when he arrived at the 2nd hospital.  After several calls to a couple of departments at CNRVMC, I called Patient Advocate, Bobbi Weeks.  She went to the different areas the patient had been in and pressed the staff to look for the medications.  They were not found at first.

It’s noteworthy when a busy clinician-researcher emails to recognize a team member’s efforts. When thank-you emails from 2 different principal investigators (PI) hit the inbox within 24 hours, you know that person’s done something extraordinary. Please join me in recognizing Dr. Mark Agyapong for his outstanding work as Clinical Research Manager in the Department of Medicine’s Clinical Research Unit. One PI extolled Mark’s ability to keep projects moving forward, to be strategic regarding next steps, and to produce deliverables on time.

We proudly celebrated Earth Day throughout the entire month with a wide range of activities taking place across the system. These events showcased our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and demonstrated how small, collective actions can make a meaningful difference. Thank you to all employees who participated, and an extra special thank you to the volunteers whose enthusiasm, time, and efforts brought these events to life. 

Last week, Carilion Family Medicine in Giles organized a meal for our HAAs in honor of Administrative Professionals Week.

On Friday, April 24, a group of leaders came together to care for our campus in observance of Earth Day. With a shared spirit of teamwork, unity, and pride, they rolled up their sleeves to make a difference.
