As we continue our response to COVID-19 within our organization, we are developing a plan for employees who may need to work remotely. If we need many employees to work remotely, this may require a phased approach. We will communicate policies and processes for remote work as soon as we have them in place.

Meanwhile, some employees may already be working remotely. If you have employees who are working from home, please communicate and reinforce the following technology guidance:

We will begin pre-construction work later this winter and break ground this spring. The first step will be construction of a secondary entrance for the Emergency Department at CRMH that will be used while the project is underway and relocation of the existing Western Virginia Water Authority pump house. We expect the Crystal Spring Tower to be completed in late 2025.

The block of Jefferson St. between Kirk Ave. and Campbell Ave. currently has just two buildings…CASB and the First National Exchange Bank.

The CASB building is less than 50 years old, having been built in 1973. But what’s interesting is what was there before it was built!

Our Great Catch Awards recognize employees who identify and report potential errors or process issues before they can harm patients. Reporting these "great catches" can help us improve our systems and processes across Carilion to keep patients safe.

We recently gave two Great Catch awards.

Guy Katz, M.D., second-year resident in General Surgery, noticed that equipment at a patient’s bedside was not working appropriately. After he reported the issue, we made process changes and purchased a new type of equipment.

Patient transportation has come a long way since the horse-drawn ambulances of the early 1900s. Through the years, technology has improved patient transportation—whether on the ground or in the air.

Life-Guard 10 was purchased in 1982 to speed response times to communities in rural western Virginia; it was the first air medical service in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The helicopter held one pilot and one paramedic and could transport one patient.

Cancer care in our region is on the brink of its next evolution.

Our President and CEO Nancy Howell Agee and her husband, the Honorable G. Steven Agee, have donated $1 million as a seed gift to jump-start plans for a world-class Carilion Clinic Cancer Center. The new center will be built on the corner of Franklin Road and Reserve Avenue, on the VTC Health Sciences and Technology Campus.

Now, you can report suspicious emails with the click of a button within Outlook.

Previously, you could report suspected phishing emails by forwarding them to be reviewed by an on-call member of the Information Security team. With the new method, the email immediately goes through an in-depth analysis; if it is determined to be malicious, the message is automatically removed from any other mailboxes.
