Groundbreakers: Organizational Changes at Carilion

We are excited to announce that Daniel R. Karolyi, M.D., Ph.D., has accepted the position of Chair of Radiology for Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Dr. Karolyi joined Carilion in 2010 and has served as co-Chair of Radiology since March 2019. He has served as Vice Chair of Radiology as well as Director of the VTCSOM Radiology clerkship since 2012. Other leadership positions within Carilion include Medical Director of MRI, Quality Officer for the Department of Radiology, and co-chair of the Medical Professional Acquisition Advisory Committee (MPAAC).

Dr. Karolyi is a national expert in MRI and has been a faculty member for the American College of Radiology (ACR) Education Center for the last decade, teaching attending radiologists from around the world about best practices and innovations in body MRI. Dr. Karolyi's other activities include chairman of the ACR Measurement and Assessment Committee, chairman of the ACR Education Center Advisory Committee, member of the ACR Commission on Publications and Lifelong Learning, member of the ACR Appropriateness Criteria Committee, and member of the ACR Practice Parameter Committee for MR Enterography. He received Level IV (Leadership Mastery) honors from the ACR's Radiology Leadership Institute and has been named to the Academy of Radiology Leadership and Management Honor Roll.

Dr. Karolyi received a B.S. in Chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his post-graduate training at Emory University including internship with the Department of Medicine, residency in Diagnostic Radiology, and fellowship in Body MRI.

As Chair of Radiology. Dr. Karolyi will be responsible for growing and developing the clinical services and medical education for general and specialty radiological and imaging services throughout Carilion and VTC. At Carilion, he will work in a dyad partnership with Tim Auwater, Vice President for Clinical Support.

We also would like to thank Sam Nakat, M.D., for his leadership as co-Chair of Radiology during the past year and a half. Dr. Nakat will continue his excellent work as Chief of the Diagnostic Section of the Department of Radiology.
