Cybercriminals are using the coronavirus pandemic to develop new phishing and identity-theft scams. We recently learned about a new scam involving unemployment benefits.

Our Information Security team is working with the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) to investigate a fraudulent unemployment claim made using an employee's personal information. The employee received a letter from the VEC regarding an unemployment application, even though the employee did not apply for unemployment benefits. The letter included a weekly benefit amount and other personal information.

During the 1950s, the hospital's residency and intern programs grew. Since 1952, there had been a resident available 24 hours a day to respond to patient needs.

More manpower was needed at the hospital, which had completed a major expansion in 1956. The hospital was also undertaking major improvements in technology, especially with radiology.

By 1959, the hospital added residencies in in medicine and surgery. A full four-year residency in pathology was approved in 1960, but was dropped in 1965. 

We have reached an agreement to purchase the last 20% share of CSJH from the SJH Community Health Foundation for $10.9 million, giving us full ownership of the hospital. 

We do not expect any day-to-day operations to change. We’ll rename the hospital Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital, consistent with the names of all other Carilion facilities, once we work through necessary regulations. The new name amplifies our commitment to a growing region.

Roanoke Hospital began training interns and residents in the early 1900s to meet its need for skilled staff to treat patients for free.

For many years, Roanoke Hospital struggled to attract interns to its limited rural facility. Early on, one to three interns worked and trained at the hospital each year. Once interns were acquired, keeping them for a full year was a challenge because benefits were negligible. Interns were hired for one year at $50 a month.
