ArchiveCore: From Carilion Innovation Startup to Credentialing Solution

Carilion Innovation is our team that helps turn ideas into reality for our employee-inventors. They help inventions get off the ground by working with industry partners or creating startup businesses. By getting projects from Carilion to broader audiences, patients across the country and globe can benefit from our employees' curiosity and spirit of innovation!
The first startup to emerge from our Innovation team is ArchiveCore, a software that helps our teams whose job it is to welcome new physicians to Carilion. The software streamlines the medical background check process known as credentialing, helping doctors go to work for us more quickly.
On average, credentialing can take up to four months, with revenue lost each day positions go unfilled. ArchiveCore transforms the credentialing system by allowing administrators to verify primary records in minutes.
Lennox McNeary, M.D., is the chief operating officer and co-founder of Archive Core. She worked for more than 11 years as a leader of our acute inpatient rehabilitation unit and is an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). Dr. McNeary founded ArchiveCore with Keel Coleman, D.O., an emergency physician and Associate Professor at VTCSOM.
Dr. McNeary, Dr. Coleman and their colleagues were very familiar with administrative delays in credentialing and set out to transform the process through innovative software that manages and verifies physicians' vital records.
"In health care, we're all stretched thin. Credentialing is vital to provide us with the best physicians to care for our patients," Dr. McNeary says. "But the credentialing system as it exists is broken. It causes lengthy delays in hiring, reducing how quickly physicians can benefit our patients and our health care system."
“With ArchiveCore, record verifications take seconds instead of weeks, reducing the potential for errors like those that occur due to missing or delayed communication such as emails and faxes,” says Dr. Coleman. “Digitally authentic records are delivered through a secure portal with just a few clicks and credentials cannot be altered, adding security that’s missing from traditional paper records."
The ArchiveCore team is excited to be the first company to emerge from working with our Carilion Innovation staff and to share the software with other health systems and hospitals.
