With Gary Scott’s sudden passing last month, a huge hole was left in our hearts as well as a void in our team. We have recently seen an uptick in complaints about phone calls from scammers who illegally spoof Carilion phone numbers to trick patients into giving information or to commit Medicare fraud.
What is Spoofing?
Phone scammers often disguise their identity by using illegal spoofing techniques to send false information to your caller ID display. To trick people into answering, spoofers may use local area codes and numbers that look familiar. They may also impersonate a local organization.
CRMH is the region’s only designated Level I Trauma Center for adult and pediatric patients, providing the most critical care possible during emergency situations.
There are four levels of trauma centers, but the classification system is not a ranking of medical care. Instead, it represents the resources available to care for patients—from the most complex multi-system trauma patient to those with mild or moderate injuries.
We have received a $1 million gift from Roanoke businessman and longtime community benefactor Maury Strauss. He made the gift in honor of his late wife, Sheila, to support the expansion of our cancer program.
The cause is close to Maury’s heart after losing his wife of 65 years to cancer in 2016. Expanding the number and scope of clinical trials available locally was the primary motivation for his gift.

While offering feedback that recognizes your peers’ strengths is welcomed, providing constructive feedback is necessary to learn where and how to improve.
