As we continue to assess and refresh our mental health service offerings, we are including a rebrand of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine services. Effective immediately, the department is now called Carilion Mental Health (CMH).
Whether during a child’s outpatient visit or a hospital stay, our child life specialists help patients and families with coping strategies through play, self-expressive activities, age-appropriate medical preparation and education. Each of these are intentionally designed to help both the child and family gain a better understanding of medical procedures, reducing their stress and fear of the unknown during a difficult time.

We created this care model for patients who are in need of primary care services, but are unable to get immediate access to a provider. For example, patients who were recently discharged from the hospital and need to schedule a follow-up visit. We may be able to assist patients with finding a Carilion Clinic primary care provider.
