Congratulations to the HR Education & Organizational Development (E&OD) team for a noteworthy 16th place win at Training Magazine’s Apex Awards, announced Monday, Feb.17,2025. In addition to this prestigious ranking (which surpassed E&OD’s previous best ranking of #37), the team was also recognized with an Outstanding Training Initiative Award for the comprehensive education and support of Carilion’s Advance Care Planning (ACP) efforts. 

Carilion Clinic Orthopedic Surgery (Dr. Bravo), Carilion Clinic Innovation (Rob Fippinger), and the Carilion Clinic Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety (Robert Hedge) recently collaborated to create a patient specific 3D anatomical model for pre-surgical planning. By working together, the team used the patient’s own X-ray to digitally design, and 3D print a custom anatomical model of an osteochondroma on the front of the left shoulder blade.

We’d like to recognize the Antimicrobial Stewardship Team for the successful launch of a new mobile and desktop application! This innovative app puts Carilion Clinic’s outpatient and inpatient antimicrobial stewardship resources—treatment guidelines, dosing guidance, references, and more—right at your fingertips. The team’s commitment to enhancing access to these vital resources will make a difference in the way we deliver care. Thank you to over 70 early adopters across Carilion who are using Eolas to improve patient outcomes.

Congratulations to Ryan King and Rob Fippinger from the Carilion Clinic Innovation, along with Marilyn Edwards RN CTL, and Braiden Saylor CVT from Carilion Clinic Cardiovascular Institute!  Together, this team invented an arm mount designed for use during fenestrated endovascular aortic repair (FEVAR) surgical procedures.

Recognizing Beth Hedrick,  CPhT Advanced for her commitment and curiosity for passing her Board Certified Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician (BCSCPT) exam!  Beth embraces new challenges and opportunities to learn every day!  She has played a key role this past year in the development of our new clean room and sterile IV compounding processes!  What an amazing way to celebrate Pharmacy Week!  Thank you Beth!

CTCH hosted the first of two Hospital Education Days on 8/13. Our Theme was Education Around the World. Each station was assigned a country theme and attendees visited each station to get their "Passport" signed off. Twenty five stations were available. Thanks to everyone who presented and attended! 

Carilion Clinic's Cardiovascular Institute is the first in the region to provide a new procedure to treat uncontrolled hypertension. Congratulations to Dr. Mirza and the CRMH Cath Lab team for this successful launch!

One of our electric doors that is supposed to stay open was drifting closed and we did not want patients to be injured. I placed a workorder and Joe from Maintenance came to take a look. The fix would require a major part, which he knew he could not get in soon, so he and his coworkers came up multiple times to try different fixes until he found a workaround that would prevent the door from closing. Thanks, Joe, for putting our patients first!

On June 18th Gabrielle "Gabby" Castro RN, Melissa Wright RN, and Megan Miller RN CTL were presented with a Great Catch Award! Each of these PACU RNs play a vital role in ensuring each patient is recovered appropriately and moved to their next destination. I am extremely proud of each of you! Keep of the great work and paying great attending to details.
