Last week, Carilion received a banner and letter from one of our community members expressing their gratitude for our healthcare staff who is working tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have placed the banner at the entrance of the Riverwalk Parking garage in Roanoke so that employees can be reminded of the essential roles they are playing in the safety and health of our community. We just wanted to remind our healthcare staff that we (and the community) recognize the hard work they are doing and are eternally grateful!

Please thank our Carilion Police and Security Team members today and every day for all of the safety they provide for us. I know that here on 5 West, we are thankful for their support and help in times of uncertainty. They are compassionate, understanding and are here when we need them. Thank you, friends in our police department, for all you do to support our team!

On September 30th, the department for Clinical Advancement and Patient Safety hosted a Great Catch Celebration at CRMH.

Because of your hard work, diligence, and courage, we exceeded our goal of 5,000 Great Catch reports during FY19.  As an organization, it is important for employees to recognize and report these Great Catches and for the organization to take action to prevent harm to our patients, our employees, or visitors.

Upon exiting birthplace, The floorcare staff found a man trying to enter without authorization. Franklin Lawson (FloorCare Staff at CNRV) simply stood at the door and impeded entrance until the nurse allowed him to enter. The man then proceeded to corner Franklin and fuss at him about doing his job instead of trying to be security, At which point Roscoe( Floorcare Staff) informed him that all staff is responsible of keeping the hospital safe even though they may not be security guards. It took a lot of courage for Franklin to stand guard at the door.

Carilion Family Medicine in Daleville recently had one of their own diagnosised with Breast Cancer at the age of 29.. Nicole said it best, "we may not be blood but we are family". Nicole, your family is behind you 110%. We love you and you continue to show us daily how strong you are. Jessica Hylton, RN was evaluating her pt on 5West when she noticed some subtle differences in their condition. It is their protocol that if a pt alarms on the Rothman Index they are to use the Sepsis tool they are currently piloting; however, because Jessica was concerned, she decided to screen her pt via the Sepsis tool, even though the pt did not alarm on the Peratrend. The Sepsis tool flagged the pt for sepsis. She immediately called the pt's physician and Clinical Administrator to come evaluate the pt at bedside. The findings warranted transfer to the ICU.

One of our nursing assistant's in Palliative Care had the courage to speak up on June 13, 2019 when we received a patient on transfer from another unit at RMH.  As she was starting to chart the vitals in a patient's medical record, she noticed that the name of the patient in EPIC did not correspond to the name of the patient that was transferred into the room.  She stopped what she was doing, having not filed any of her work in EPIC, and asked the nurse to clarify the name of the patient that was physically in the Palliative unit bed.  The nurse spoke the patient's name to th

Erik Johnson with TSC has been extremely helpful with the Admixture Pharmacy in implementing a new printer software program. He has patiently answered all of my numerous questions and emails, and spent several hours in the pharmacy working on these printers and set up.
