Dr. Kiran Khalid, RN Angela Martin & LCSW Kathleen Lynd worked a very complex and emotionally fraught case on Friday. A patient admitted with a very serious wound and his mother was struggling with accepting that he was ready for the next steps in his recovery. A coordinated best practices plan for his care across multiple specialties was formulated by Dr. Khalid, and then Kat and Angie worked extensively with the mother to explain and implement the plan over several hours.

Brook Brown, RN and Clinical Team Leader in the Emergency Department at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital was celebrated as a DAISY Award Honoree for the second time.

Per Brook's nomination,

" Brook was absolutely priceless with Mom who came in with a UTI. She is 78 and Brook was so patient with her. I am an RN myself and appreciate her compassion! She is extraordinary at her job and made my Mom feel like she was her top priority."

Brook provides excellent care to our patients and lives Carilion's Values! Thank you Brook!

We had a patient that requested a Catholic Priest to do his last rites. We called for a Priest who said they couldn't come until the next day, so Lauren Price called her Priest who came and gave the patient their last rites. Lauren lives our Carilion values - Compassion.

We have a very compassionate co-worker here at Carilion Clinic Parkway Blue Ridge.  Her name is Gloria Widener MA-C, who went out of her way on her time off to make sure a patient received her medication.  The patient had been a victim of identity theft and did not have a cent to her name thus could not afford the antibiotic she needed.  Gloria went to the pharmacy, paid for the medication and traveled to the other side of Roanoke (from where she lived) and delivered it to her home.

Greg Burch, Materials Management Site Lead, was inspired by his parents' encouragement to give back to the community, and he turned that inspiration into action by working with his team to collect and donate several boxes of warm winter coats to the inpatient mental health unit. His parents instilled in him the value of helping others, and his generous donation is a perfect example of how those teachings can make a real difference. This thoughtful gesture will provide much-needed warmth and comfort to individuals who are discharging from the mental health department.

I recently took my mother to Carilion Clinic in Galax on short notice to be seen for a possible EGD. Lisa Marsh, RN, was the nurse for the provider. She was so kind and attentive to both my mom and to me. She was able to get the EGD scheduled in the next 2 days, which is phenomenal!! Thank you, Lisa, for always showing me and my family such compassion and care!

Kylie Yates, General Pediatrics CTL at Tanglewood Childrens, has consistently supported and gone above and beyond for her coworkers.  Not only does she have valuable expertise in pediatrics, but before becoming CTL, she was preceptor and trained most of the staff that currently work at Tanglewood General Pediatrics. More importantly, Kylie is empathetic, kind and always has an open for ear those she works with.  She is respected by her fellow nurses and the physicians.  There have been more than a few times that I have been stressed, made a mistake or felt overwhelmed.

We wanted to recognize two amazing individuals, Bailey Steele and Katie Church, who went out of their way to grab a milkshake for a cancer patient receiving chemotherapy. Katie and Bailey, your small act of kindness meant the world to the patient and brought the patient's spouse to tears. It is proof that even the even the little things make a big difference in someone's day. Thank you for showing compassion in such a tangible way. Your act of kindness meant the world to them and to those around who witnessed your sweet gesture.

Arah Robbins, DO, exemplifies the impact of compassionate care. As an esteemed hospitalist, she blends clinical expertise with a personal touch. As an Assistant Professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Dr. Robbins mentors aspiring physicians while contributing to cutting-edge medical education.

Beyond her hospital duties, she engages with the Roanoke community through skill workshops for medical trainees and volunteer efforts in Grandin Village. 

Tiffany Alley, RN went above and beyond providing patient centered care through her diligent efforts last night. Her outstanding dedication and proactive support are truly commendable.
