The 25th Annual Roanoke Regional Heart Walk took place on October 20, 2018 at River’s Edge Park.  It was a great fall day filled with fun and camaraderie as we walked to support the American Heart Association's important work toward prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.  Our own Steve Arner was the chair for this milestone event, and he and Mike Abbott helped to kick-off the festivities.

I would like to thank Nicholas Shafer for this commitment to our work community!! I set a personal goal for myself to learn American Sign Language.  I didn't realize what a challenge it would be to learn without having someone to help me practice signing.  Nicholas signs and has been amazing in his efforts to help me. Nicholas has made time on his lunch break or before leaving work sign with me.  Sign language is not only benefiting my interactions with deaf or hearing impaired patients/staff but it has allowed me to make a new friend!

The staff at SouthEast Family Medicine did a Halloween theme of Dr. Suess. The patients had a great time seeing everyone! This was so much fun for not only the staff but all patients and their families!! 

The pediatric physical, occupational and speech therapists transform into the Land of Oz for reverse trick or treating!

Our Shared Governance Engagement Committee held the first annual Rad Onc Pumpkin Contest. Each area of the department contributed a pumpkin and the patients and their families voted for their favorite. This created an atmosphere of community that not only engaged the employees, but patients and their families as well. Everyone had a great time decorating and voting for the department favorite. First prize went to the "CT" pumpkin.  

Things were buzzing this Halloween in the Postal Drive Pediatric office. Flowers, bees, and bee keepers made for a sweet time for our patients and their families!

I want to applaud and commend our new hires / recent hires at the ED at CFMH. We have lost some people over the last couple of months, but we have gained some  amazing staff! They are professional and smart and kind, and I have been watching them as they complete their assignments then " go check on" their co-workers ( this is the way we roll). If this is something we have taught them, I think it is maybe the most important lesson of all- Teamwork!

Last week CFMH recognized Infection Prevention Week by holding a poster contest.  Angie Shively, RT(R)(CT) used her unique creativity and artistry to make a poster, which educated all of us about the Trophon high-level disinfection unit.  Her poster was unique in that it used the "Shake, Rattle and Roll" theme with perfectly round vinyl records from "back in the day".  Angie's poster won the contest and the department a pizza party for lunch.  We are so proud to have someone so creative and talented here at CFMH!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Carilion Giles Community Hospital hosted an after-hours digital screening mammography event to accommodate patient's busy lifestyles. Refreshments, gifts, and educational items were given away. This event was able to fill 16 appointments. Thank you, Leigh, Sabrina, and Pam for hosting this event for our community.
