Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for superior energy performance.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s buildings is critical to protecting our environment, “ said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch. “From the boiler room to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their buildings more efficient and earning EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification.”

The Grinch made a special trip down from Mount Crumpit to spread some holiday cheer to some very special WHOs. The Grinch and the entire Mobile Imaging Services team wish each of you a wonderful holiday season and a very blessed New Year!

The snow was heavy and deep in the free clinic parking lot in Rocky Mount.  Patients were slipping and sliding as they tried to get in and out.  On Thursday morning, Sonya Ledbetter and her husband drove from their home in Ferrum and plowed the free clinic parking lot.  Sonya is a Radiologic Technologist in our Imaging Department at Franklin Memorial Hospital.  Due to her true dedication to our community, Sonya and her husband braved the snow and made the parking lot safe for our community.

Kudos to the CCPT Neo-Peds EMTs on their annual team goal to volunteer within the community. This year, on two separate days, they staffed toy drives for Toys For Tots, obtaining nearly 800 toys for local children in need! Last week, they also cooked a meal at the Roanoke Ronald McDonald House for the families lodging there while their children are hospitalized. Way to live the Carilion values of Compassion and CommUNITY, guys!

I am a young mother of three and Carilion employee. After work yesterday, I had to pick up my hardwood flooring from the store after work. With my husband being out of the country, I was facing getting it to my house alone, when the entire 1,500 pound pallet fell off of tge back of the truck. I was in the three way intersection in front of RMH knew it was going to be an incredible challenge to unpack the pallet and get 20 very heavy boxes from ground level back onto the truckbed without hurting myself or getting hit by traffic.

A vehicle was driving around the smoke block across the street hauling a load of flooring. Her straps broke on the load and the entire load landed in the road. The lady in the vehicle was alone. She turned her truck around to come back to her load and 5 Carilion hero's were waiting to help her recover her load. Kudos to Erin Manning, Audrey Phillips, Becca Austin, Lisa Hall and Tasha Lewis.

Rhonda Dyba (Lactation Consultant at the Birthplace, CNRV) noted that the team needed a morale boost early last year. She decided to start our Sunshine Events. Every month, she will work to determine a theme, (i.e. soup day, grilled cheese day, dip day, spooky food day, etc) coordinate a date, and purchase a "prize" for the most loved dish of the day. The team really look forward to these event every month and they have really increased morale. Thank you, Rhonda for taking this on as our Sunshine leader!!

Carilion Clinic's Emergency Department (ED) demonstrated the spirit of generosity this Thanksgiving holiday! ED Patient Rep. Mary Wheeling asked her co-workers to help her support Volunteer Services' clothes closet. ED staff dug deep and donated $512.69! Mary took the money and spent every penny of it buying new and gently used clothing for the closet. She delivered three huge boxes to Volunteer Manager Shanna Flowers on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.

I would like to recognize and thank Sarah Beth Dinwiddie, a nurse in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, for being recognized by the Governor's EMS Advisory Board for her Outstanding Contribution to EMS in Virginia.  I am attaching the article which outlines all of the recipients but I wanted to make sure that Sarah's fellow employee's new what great work she is doing to promote Carilion Clinic's good name!
