Mirzeta Jasarevic is the MOST wonderful nurse. She is an excellent charge nurse. When I had a difficult assignment she went out of her way to help me. My patients that shift would not have had the excellent care they deserve without her.

Jackie D on 12 west is an amazing nurse. Working as her NA is always such a pleasure. She is always bubbly and friendly and so willing to jump in and help with patient care. She makes hard, crazy shifts fun and enjoyable with all her hard work and her fun personality! She is such a caring nurse to her patients and she truly appreciates her nursing assistants as well. You never have to go searching for help with Jackie. She is always right behind you to help with whatever needs to be done for the patients.

Charlie Tarasidis, pharmacy, shared that he has been named a local Public Health Hero by the New River Health District under the Virginia Department of Health for the tireless work he’s doing in  community education on opioid usage, substance use and the prevention of deaths from overdoses.  He pulled in Ashley Hash from outreach for a WOW photo. Congratulations Charlie, your passion for this cause and your efforts are being recognized inside and outside of Carilion.

Governor Northam Announces Environmental Excellence Award Winners

Carilion Clinic's Department of Psychiatry was selected as one of three hubs for Virginia's Project ECHO (Extending Community Health Outcomes).  Dr. Marrieth Rubio was the featured presenter at the latest of these biweekly videoconference educational learning opportunities that provide best practice information regarding office-based opioid treatment.  Each 2nd and 4th Friday at 12 noon ECHO sessions are broadcast from the Psychiatry Department throughout Virginia with a particular focus on reaching the southwestern part of the state.

Thanks to the quick action of CNA,  Barbara Pack, with Home Health in the New River Valley, one of our Home Care patients got the emergency care he needed!  Upon arrival to her patient's home, Barbara noticed that her patient was having trouble breathing and not his usual self.  Barbara took quick action and immediately called her supervisor. The patient's wife stated that if Barbara hadn't picked up on the changes things could have been much worse and her husband probably wouldn't have made it.

A patient being discharged made a comment that she was not looking forward to Thanksgiving coming up because she would be all alone back at the nursing home. Michele Harvey and David Makin from the CGCH Rehab Department heard this and decided to make sure this patient had a Happy Thanksgiving. They took the time to go to the nursing home that the patient lived at to have Thanksgiving Dinner with her.  Going out of their way to care for the emotional needs of this patient is just one of the many reasons that David and Michele are so special.

We had a patient scheduled for a procedure we do not perform in our department and it was unfortunately unnoticed until the patient was already here.

After speaking to the Radiologist who reads the type of things the patient was scheduled for, he recommended a CT study. I contacted CT at RMH and they were unable to do the procedure as they are only performed at CCR3 CT.

I contacted Rene CCR3 CT and was told they could perform the procedure if X-Ray was available to do the other part of the procedure (I had no idea it was a team effort type of study!!)

I just want to give the night shift team on 10 Mtn Pcu a shout out. I had the pleasure of working up there 2 out of my 4 nights this week and I just can't thank them enough for being such an awesome group to work with. They really care about their patients and it shows. Being in resource in can be a little intimidating, but the staff on 10 Mtn make you feel right at home. Everyone is willing to help out when needed, aides and nurses alike. They are just  a great group and they deserve a shout out! Thanks for all your help this week you guys! Can't wait to come back! :)

Congratulations to all who participated in our recent Virgin Pulse corporate-wide challenge!  We had a grand total of 1,792 employees participate in our most recent "Food Around the Globe" challenge, and an impressive 495 participants (nearly 28 percent) average 10,000 steps a day to earn the 100 point bonus – way to go!
