A surprise reunion took place one year ago to the month that Shermicia "Nikki" Becks endured a horrific car accident, facing a possible foot amputation. She was granted her wish to reunite with her care team when she danced her way into the CRMH board room. She presented a plaque to the staff during her tearful reunion as a way to show our clinical staff how their daily work makes a difference.

Anya from resource is always working hard and willing to teach others. It's always a great experience getting to work with her. Thanks for all that you do!

Multiple Carilion Clinic service lines and departments collected school supplies to assist in our community efforts with the Roanoke Rescue Mission.  We distributed over 800 back packs to children across the Roanoke Valley.  This project adheres to our Carilion Clinic values of collaboration and compassion! Thank you to everyone who participated!

Thank you to Alexa Pusterla, LPN from Carilion Clinic General/ Bariatric Surgery, for making sure that our Ortho clinic had helpful information about NSAIDs and Steriod use in the Gastric Bypass patients. Great to ensure that we are provided the best care for the patients through both our clinics.

The ED staff would like to send out a huge thank you to Emily Woody, RN, for coming to our rescue on Sunday night. The unit was full and our waiting room was filling. Emily called from the ICU to check on us before we had even had the time to think about who to ask for help. Within minutes she was downstairs answering call bells, starting lines, drawing labs, and passing medications; and she did it all with a smile on her face! We can not thank you enough Emily; you were the life line we needed in a moment when we all felt like we were struggling to keep our heads above water.

CNRV Interventional Radiology RN LeeAnna Coffey stepped up when our usual clinic nurse needed to leave at the last minute.  Even though LeeAnna had not worked in the IR Ambulatory setting, she rose to the occasion and helped our patients get through the clinic day. IR RN Jennifer Harris helped us remotely from Roanoke with our technological needs, and our patients were able to get the care they needed.

Sustainability is at the heart of our healing mission – and we’re proud to share that our sustainability strategies have won us national awards for two of our hospitals. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion New River Valley both received the 2021 Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care.

The Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Team sees many people at CRMH who are homeless. They live their lives walking the streets and many have come without shoes on their feet. Dr. Del Fabbro went and purchased a pair for one patient but when more people began coming without shoes, they needed a more sustainable solution. Debby Jones-Worrell, MSW, made it her mission to do just that. She reached out to Fleet Feet, another Roanoke community non-profit, who was willing to help. They have a warehouse of shoes that were returned that they cannot re-sell.

The OR team would like to give a shout out to Hannah Ingram in Radiology. We appreciate your willingness to help us move our patient safely from the OR table to their bed on Friday evening 7/16/2021. You saw our need and met it without having to be asked. Thank you so much!!

Jenny Luhr, RN at the Riverside Infusion Center and 6 West Infusion Center, initiated soft plastics recycling in her department, through the Trex Soft Plastics recycling program. The team worked to collect soft plastics for recycling and when they achieved their goal of 500 pounds, they received a complimentary bench from Trex. Jenny said, “While the benches are a nice incentive, our primary goal is diverting waste from the landfill. Our team has really come together on this mission to reduce waste!”
