Happy Medical Laboratory Professionals Week 2025! This year’s theme is inspired by Scooby-Doo's Mystery Machine, highlights the lab's role in solving medical mysteries. To go along with this year’s theme, CFMH Infection Preventionist, Angela Moore, caught all the lab staff "Red-Handed" while educating on proper hand hygiene techniques and 5 Moments of hand hygiene. Education on PPE and isolation practices was also provided. 

    The Virginia Society of Radiologic Technologists held the annual meeting April 3rd and 4th, at Virginia Beach.  Cheryl Cunningham is the instructor for the Radiologic Technologist – Limited program, developed as a collaboration of Carilion Clinic and the Roanoke County Public Schools/Burton Center for Arts and Technology.  She presented at the conference with attendance by the 4 RCPS/BCAT senior students in the third graduating class of the Radiography program.  The 4 high school seniors and Cheryl were recognized for their program and as

This week, we took part in GIVE Roanoke Day to raise vital funds for our pediatric patients battling cancer and blood disorders—and thanks to your incredible support and the support of the community, we raised more than $7,000 through online and offline donations!

Throughout the campaign, we shared the stories of three young leukemia patients who are now in the maintenance phase of their treatment. Their journeys of strength and resilience touched many, and we’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to highlight their journeys.

Thank you to everyone who participates in the Ronald McDonald Tab Top collection program at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. In just over one year, the collection house was filled with aluminum can tabs for recycling. The total weight was 198.5 pounds!  This is approximately equivalent to 225,099 tabs! These tabs were delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke, who will recycle the tabs to raise funds used to operate the house.

CVI team members, Joyce Martin, PA; Sarah Plichta; Evelyn Robertson, RN; Teneah Copeland, LPN and Kimberly Armijo, CMA, employees from both the Martinsville and Roanoke location worked together to save the life of a patient who was having a critical medical emergency.  The patient arrived at Carilion Clinic Cardiology Martinsville for a routine outpatient visit.  Following the visit, the patient experienced a critical event that required immediate action.   The CVI team members quickly identified the needs of the patient; they communicated clearly with each oth

The CVI Retention Committee hosted a unit competition to collect coloring books and supplies for Carilion Children's Hospital. The book drive yielded hundreds of coloring books and dozens of colored pencils and markers. There were even some activity toys donated. Winners were CVI Vascular OR for collecting several hundred items themselves and CVI PAPA/PACU for their handcrafted wooden collection box the Children's Hospital can use as a treasure chest for years to come. A big thank you to all of the CVI departments for participating in this event.

A big thank you to our Artist in Residence, Michele Walter, for creating a unique and beautiful piece of artwork as part of a collaborative effort between Wellness, Sustainability, Nursing and Pharmacy to help us celebrate Earth Day 2025.  And thank you to the units at CRMH that helped us collect the medication vial caps for the piece, the Emergency Department, 9 South PCU, 9 South ICU, 8 South PCU, 8 Mountain ICU and Pharmacy.

Did you know that firefighters face a higher risk of developing skin cancers, particularly melanoma?

Last week, our Dermatology team hosted a free skin cancer screening event for Roanoke County Firefighters. Organized by Lesli Mace, PA-C, and Dr. Mariana Phillips—with clinical support from Lauren Lane, PA-C, Jarret Faust, PA-C, Kate Tolmie, PA-C, Tracy Loyd, RN, and our dedicated medical students—the event provided screenings for nearly 50 firefighters.

Dr. Zara Zahid, pediatric dentist at Carilion Dental Care, combined her passion for education and her patients’ love of reading to create the Free Little Library — a fun, meaningful alternative to the usual post-visit toy. Instead of picking a toy from a basket, young patients now select a free book to take home after visits — no returns required. The goal is to spark a love of reading and make books more accessible.
