World PNA Day

Submitted by wmdavis on

For World Pneumonia Day on November 12, members of the infection prevention, CAPS, and nursing quality teams rounded on units at CMC with a ‘treats and trivia’ cart to spread awareness about prevention of all types of hospital acquired pneumonia.  We spoke primarily with nursing and respiratory staff, and all were welcoming and engaged with the content we shared.  A culture of curiosity is foundational to reliabily safe patient care, and the teams we encountered exhibited that Carilion value well.

Keeping a patient out of the hospital by going above and beyond to arrange urgent care

Submitted by acsane on

I want to thank Anne Cattigan, CMC Nursing uint director for infusion center for arranging rapid daily parenteral antibiotics to keep a patient with complex illness and very resistant urinary tract infection out of the hospital.  She always goes above and beyond and I appreciate her care for each and every patient.  She even arranged for this to occur over the weekend on Sunday at another unit !  That is excellence.   THANK YOU for your care and leadership.

Trooper the Therapy Dog on WSLS

Submitted by tnmedley on

Trooper the therapy dog is one of Carilion Pet Pal's most famous pups! He soaks up the spotlight every time he visits our patients, guests, and staff. However, most people don't know the story of his handler, Tony Hernandez, who never wants to be the center of attention. Tony was a NY State Trooper and faced three near-fatal accidents, one that left him seriously injured. In his interview with WSLS, Tony stated "I don't know how I'm still here...so now, I do this with Trooper."
