Trooper the Therapy Dog on WSLS

Trooper the therapy dog is one of Carilion Pet Pal's most famous pups! He soaks up the spotlight every time he visits our patients, guests, and staff. However, most people don't know the story of his handler, Tony Hernandez, who never wants to be the center of attention. Tony was a NY State Trooper and faced three near-fatal accidents, one that left him seriously injured. In his interview with WSLS, Tony stated "I don't know how I'm still here...so now, I do this with Trooper."

At our annual Volunteer Gala in April, Tony and Trooper won the Volunteer Service Hours Award in recognition of their service to Carilion Clinic.

In partnership with Carilion Children's Hospital's Child Life Program, Tony & Trooper were able to visit a pediatric patient and unit staff. A big thanks to Sarah Kress, Isobel O'Hare and the Peds team for their help in making this such a successful afternoon!
