The CAPS Team is excited to announce that the staff from the Vascular OR submitted the most non-anonymous Near Misses/Unsafe Conditions (Great Catch!) throughout SafeWatch in the month of April, for a total of 24 Great Catches! Your commitment to patient safety is shining through and we want to take a moment to celebrate you! Your team is a valuable asset here at Carilion Clinic.

Congratulations to 6 Mountain ICU Unit Director, Troy Evans, for graduating with his MSN yesterday! He has been balancing full time school with working full time and helping to ensure his staff are well supported during the last year! We are so proud of you, Troy!

Medication co-pays can be a tough subject when brought up to patients but Pam Holcomb was a blessing behind the scenes. She worked diligently with Amy Whichello to have all of the patients prescriptions sent to the Lobby Pharmacy so that co-pay cards could be applied. This ended up saving the patient over $900!!! Hearing the excitement in Pam's voice as each co-pay card lowered the total cost of the medications was encouraging to hear. Her dedication to helping patients is a true definition of what Carilion is all about.

When our housekeeper missed a day of work, our clinic was still cleaned by these wonderful ladies!  They all worked hard one morning before opening to make sure our clinic was ready for the day.  They swept and mopped the floors, took the trash out, and wiped down all surfaces.  Thank you Danielle McNabb, Brooke Wall, and Bre Akers for your dedication to our clinic!

We are excited to share that we have performed our first two TCAR procedures at CNRV on April 26th.  Dr. Ash Raju and Dr. Joe Downing each performed their first TCAR procedure.  The surgical services staff, CCU staff, and anesthesia team have worked hard to train and prepare for this exciting day.  The ability to now offer this in the New River Valley will give patients the option to have this less invasive approach to carotid artery surgery right in their own community. 

A big shout out to Aaron Boush, Director, Community Health & Outreach, for being recognized as an American Red Cross community impact hero for his work in creating the Morningside Urban Farm. Edie Naughton, R.N., who passed away this past year and who we miss so greatly, was also recognized for her outstanding role in this work.I am so proud and grateful for the contribution both of you have made, as well as the entire Community Health and Outreach team.

We celebrated Patient Access Week April 4th-10th here at Parkview for our pre-services teams. Established in 1982, Patient Access Week is a celebration of the people in the Patient Access profession. We weren't able to celebrate last year due to covid. It was very important that we come up with some innovative ways to celebrate bearing in mind safety precautions. Our week consisted of Patient Access week trivia, crossword puzzles, office scavenger hunt, prizes and goodies. Since March of 2020, we've had a hybrid team some working from home and some here on site.

I would like to recognize the following Telecommunicators:

These Dispatchers have a combined 159 years of Dispatch experience; with 97 of those being  previous employment with Roanoke City & the City of Salem. Their faces are unknown to the majority of Carilion but their voices are not.
